Power on the computer.B. Connect the coaxial cable to the cablemodemís CATV cable connector and to thewall cable outlet.C. Connect the USB cable to the modem and tothe computerís USB port.D. Plug the cable modemís power supply into asurge protector or into an electrical outlet.Within a few minutes, the computer detects thecable modem.Install the USB SoftwareWhen the computer detects the cable modem, insertthe Cable Connections CD and follow the on-screenprompts to install the necessary driver files. Follow theinstructions for your operating system.Windows 98: The Add New Hardware Wizardscreen appears.A. Select Search for the best driver for yourdevice. (Recommended) and click Next.B. Check the CD-ROM drive check box andclick Next to search for the necessary driverfiles.C. Select The updated driver (Recommended)3Com HomeConnectTM Cable ModemExternal with USB and click Next.D. When Windows locates the driver files, clickNext to automatically install the necessaryfiles.E. When prompted, insert the Windows 98 CDinto the CD-ROM drive and click OK.F. After Windows copies the driver files, clickFinish. The System Settings Change dialogbox appears.G. Click Yes to reboot your computer.2USB Setup Ethernet Setup1Windows 2000: The Found New HardwareWizard screen appears.A. Select Search for a suitable driver for mydevice (recommended) and click Next.B. Check the CD-ROM drives check box andclick Next to search for the necessarydriver files.C. When the Found New Hardware Wizarddisplays the search results, click Next toinstall the necessary driver files.D. If the Digital Signature Not Found screenappears, click Yes to continue theinstallation.E. When the Found New Hardware Wizardcompletes the installation, click Finish.READREADREADREADREADMEMEMEMEMEFIRST!FIRST!FIRST!FIRST!FIRST!Check the LEDsWhen the modem is operating properly, theLink Status and Power LEDs on the front of themodem are illuminated and not blinking. If youare powering up the cable modem for the firsttime, allow up to 15 minutes for the Link StatusLED to stop blinking. See ìCable ModemOperationî in the ìGetting Started Guideî formore information.2Use this installation process with the following operating systems: Windows 98, Windows Me, or Windows 2000.Ethernet Installation ProcessSelect which setup you wantto use.Before you begin installing the cable modem, you mustdecide which setup you want to use. Be sure to follow theinstallation process for the setup you would like to use. Forthe easiest installation, use the USB setup. However, if youwant to use multiple computers connected to the modem viaa hub, or use the modem with a Macintosh computer, youmust use the Ethernet setup.After you finish installing the cable modem, youcan install the Cable Connections CD, whichcontains the ìGetting Started Guide,î special offers,and trial programs.41!3ï Use this installation process with the following operating systems:Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0, or Windows 2000.ï Requires an Ethernet network interface card (not included).ï Instructions for installing the cable modem with a Macintosh computer are in the ìGetting StartedGuide.îVerify the TCP/IP ProtocolConfigurationBefore installing the cable modem using theEthernet setup, you must verify that your computerhas the TCP/IP protocol installed. Follow theprocedure for your operating system to verify orinstall the TCP/IP protocol.Windows 95/98/Me:A. Right-click the Network Neighborhood icon(Windows Me: the My Network Places icon)on the Windows desktop and click Properties.B. Look for an entry named TCP/IP. If you seeTCP/IP listed next to your Ethernet hardwaredevice, you can now go to ìInstall the CableModem.î If TCP/IP is not listed, however, youmust complete the following steps:1. Click Add.2. Click Protocol, and click Add.3. Click Microsoft in the Manufacturers: listand Click TCP/IP in the NetworkProtocols: list.C. Click OK.D. Click Yes when prompted to restart yourcomputer.You can now go to ìInstall theCable Modem.îUSB Installation ProcessNote: Instructions for installing thecable modem with a Macintoshcomputer are in the ìGetting StartedGuide.î1Windows 2000:A. Right-click the My Network Places icon onthe Windows desktop.B. Right-click Local Area Connection andclick Properties. Look for an entry namedTCP/IP. If you see TCP/IP listed next to yourEthernet hardware device, you can now go toìInstall the Cable Modem.î If TCP/IP isnot listed, complete the following steps:1. Scroll to the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)option.2. Click to place a check mark in theInternet Protocol check box.3. Click OK. You can now go to ìInstallthe Cable Modem.î22After you finish installing the cable modem, youcan install the Cable Connections CD, whichcontains the ìGetting Started Guide,î special offers,and trial programs.Check the LEDsWhen the modem is operating properly, the LinkStatus and Power LEDs on the front of the modemare illuminated and not blinking. If you are poweringup the cable modem for the first time, allow up to 15minutes for the Link Status LED to stop blinking. SeeìCable Modem Operationî in the ìGetting StartedGuideî for more information.3Install the Cable ModemA. Power off the computer.B. Connect the coaxial cable to the cable modemísCATV cable connector and to the cable outlet.C. Connect the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port andto the cable modem.D. Plug the cable modemís power adapter into thecable modemís power jack and into a wall outletor surge protector.E. Power on the computer.22Windows NT 4.0:A. Right-click the Network Neighborhood iconand click Properties.B. Click the Bindings tab.C. Select All Protocols from the Show bindingsfor drop-down list.D. Look for an entry named TCP/IP. If you seeTCP/IP listed, double-click it to search for yourEthernet card. If you see your Ethernet cardlisted, you can now go to ìInstall the CableModem.î If TCP/IP or your Ethernet card isnot listed, however, you must complete thefollowing steps:1. Click the Protocols tab.2. Click Add.3. Click TCP/IP protocol in the Networkprotocol list.4. Click OK.5.
