Acoustic Magic Voice Tracker Instructions Manual
INSTRUCTIONSGeneral SetupConnect the power and audio cables to their appropriatejacks on the back of the Voice TrackerTM Array (seeFigure 1). Plug the power adapter into a standard 110volt wall outlet and connect the other end of the audiocable to the “Line In” input on your computer’s soundcard. The adapter supplies 6V DC power to themicrophone.Figure 1 – Audio and Power Cable ConnectionsThe Voice TrackerTM Array may be used as the audioinput device for a variety of speech and multi-mediaapplications. Many of the software packages whichutilize a speech input have setup tools which allow youto specify that you are using the “Line In” connection onyour soundcard and to adjust the sound level (volume)automatically. Please refer to your specific applicationsoftware for details. To adjust the volume or inputselection manually on a Windows PC, see the AdjustingYour Soundcard section at the end of theseinstructions.PositioningAim the array in the direction of the desired talker(s).When properly positioned, the talker will be able to seeall 5 green position indicators (see Figure 2).Figure 2 – Voice Tracker TM Array Front ViewThe Voice TrackerTM can be tilted up or down to facilitatemounting on the desktop (tilted up) or on the monitor(tilted down). For speech recognition applications, thedesktop position will exhibit slightly better performance. If you mount it on top of the monitor, makes sure it issecured so it doesn’t fall off.Mode SwitchesThe Voice Tracker TM has 4 operational modes, selectedby two switches: the Field switch and the LocationDependent Squelch TM (LDS TM ) switch (see Figure 3).Figure 3 – Field and LDSTM SwitchesThe Field switch determines the scanning range of thearray. In the wide-angle mode, the Voice Tracker TM willscan +/- 90 degrees. This is useful if the user desires tolisten to an entire room. In the narrow-angle mode, thearray will scan +/- 45 degrees. The narrower scanningrange helps to reduce the impact of undesired talkersand noise sources outside the region of interest. When the LDS TM switch is set to On, the Voice Tracker TMwill turn off during periods of silence and when the soundsource is located outside the array’s reception region asdetermined by the Field switch. The array turns onagain very quickly when the user resumes talking. When used together with the narrow field of view, theLDS TM can be employed to ignore unwanted sounds.Once the talker pauses and the Voice TrackerTM turnsoff, the array will only turn on again when sounds comefrom within the +/- 45 degree listening area (see Figure4).Figure 4 – Listening AreaFor speech recognition applications, when the limitedscan range and LDS TM are on, the generation ofspurious words or commands from sources outside thelistening area will be reduced. The user should decidewhether this feature improves performance in theirparticular noise environment.Using a narrow field of view and LDSTM can also beuseful when teleconferencing. If the incoming talker’sspeech is played through loudspeakers positionedoutside the +/- 45 degree listening area, the array willturn off when only the far-end talker is active, therebyminimizing echo in the channel. |
