NEW BP-2002TLNOW even more incrediblewith 250-watt ampbetter fit apartments and smallerliving rooms (not to mention small-er budgets). The result is the BP-2002, whichlooks almost identical to the BP-2000. It also shares the two designideas that made the BP-2000 whatit is: It uses a bipolar driver config-uration, with speaker driversmounted on both the front andback panels of the speaker; andeach speaker has its own built-inpowered subwoofer.Seems I’ve become something ofa champion for the bipolar sound. That’s because most A/V writersjudge gear by some sort of theoreti-cal benchmark of “accuracy” (as ifthey know what the hell a certainrecording’s supposed to sound likein the first place), and many con-sider bipolar sound to be inherentlyinaccurate. I prefer to judge soundby simply how much I dig it. I wantto be entertained, to relax and focuson the music, not to have to hold myhead precisely the same distancefrom my stereo speakers so I can getpinpoint sonic imaging. And the big, exciting bipolar sound is what doesit for me (especially on the purist,“accurate” stereo-miked recordingsI’ve produced myself). The mix ofthe direct sound from the drivers inthe front and reflected sound fromthe rear drivers makes both musicand movies sound more spacious, and less like they’re coming from aset of speakers. The downside is thatyou don’t get the pinpoint sonicimaging that conventional, directradiating speakersprovide. But youdo get a muchbigger sweet spot,so the speakerssound good fromone end of thecouch to theother.... I’m here totell you that I’veeked more long-term pleasure outof bipolars thanfrom any otherspeaker I’ve used. The BP-2000used two midrange/woofer drivers andI can’t understand why everyone’sso up in arms about downsizing. I’lladmit all this corporate layoff stuffhas its bleak, depressing side, butfor a guy who grew up ordering“husky”-size pants from the Searscatalog—and who certainly hasn’tgotten any smaller since then—theword downsizing always has apositive ring to it.There’s one recent downsizingthat we can be happy about: thenew Definitive Technology BP-2002 speaker.Flush with theincredible suc-cess of lastyear’s BP-2000,which we’veheard is cur-rently the best-selling speakerin the pricerange,Definitivedecided to seeif it could cre-ate a smallerversion of theBP-2000, onethat would“…you’ll beblown awayby theBP2002s andwe demandthat you gohear ‘em.”Definitive TechnologyBP-2002 Speaker SystemBP-2002 Main Speaker, C/L/R-2002 Center, BP-2X SurroundsBy Brent Butterworth“It was literally staggering!”“...the big, excitingbipolar sound is whatdoes it for me....”“It’s very tight, very well-definedand very deep.”“…the speakerssounded fantastic….”ACBOne of the best we’veever heardOverall RatingA.
