Thank you for purchasing the DuraTrax Æ Piranha ô DC PeakCharger. Capable of charging nickel-cadmium (NiCd) andnickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries, the DuraTrax Piranha DCPeak Charger is specifically designed for charging 6 or 7-cellsub-C battery packs at approximately 4 amps maximum from a12 volt DC power source. Piranhaís highly accurate peak detectioncircuitry ensures that batteries reach full charge every time. Thisis a major advantage over traditional ìwind-upî chargers, takingall of the guess-work out of battery charging at the track. Thesimple push of a button is all the control that is needed, and twostatus LEDs aid in monitoring charge progress.Read this entire instruction manual to learn about specificfunctions and features and safety information. Damageresulting from misuse or modification of this charger will voidyour warranty.Input Voltage: 11-15V DCBattery Types: nickel-cadmium (NiCd) andnickel-metal hydride (NiMH)Number Cells: 6 or 7Battery Capacities: 1200-3600mAhMax. Do NOT attempt to charge other types of rechargeablebatteries as permanent damage to the battery and chargercould result.ï Do not allow water, moisture or foreign objects into the charger.ï Do not attempt to use batteries with more/fewer cells or totalvoltage than listed in the specifications.ï Do not leave the charger unattended while charging. Disconnectthe battery and remove input power from chargerimmediately if the charger becomes hot!! Allow the chargeror battery to cool down before reconnecting.ï Do not place the charger or battery on a flammable surface ornear a flammable object while in use. Keep away from carpets, cluttered workbenches, etc.ï Do not block the vent holes located on the rear and bottom ofthe charger. Place the charger on a hard, flat surface and keepobjects clear of the rear of the case to allow proper heatventilation.ï Do not use automotive battery chargers as a power supply forthis charger.ï Always disconnect from input power when not in use.ï Do not overcharge batteries as permanent damage could result.Do not attempt to charge a battery if it is hot.ï Keep out of reach of children. While similar in appearance to NiCd batteries and having thesame 1.2V rating per cell, NiMH cells contain a different chemicalmakeup which requires different care and handling.ï Do not to allow NiMH batteries to overheat at any time.Heat can adversely affect the performance of NiMH batteries. Ifoverheating is observed, disconnect the battery from thecharger immediately and allow to cool down! Reduce chargecurrent rate for future charges.ï Store NiMH packs with some voltage remaining on the cells.ï Use a NiMH battery pack no more than three cycles per day, with a two to three hour break in-between for cooling. Morefrequent use is likely to overheat the pack.ï NiMH cells have a self-discharge rage of approximately 20ñ25%(compared to 15% for NiCd batteries). Thus, if NiMH batterieshave been inactive for more than a few days it is important torecharge them immediately prior to use.The DuraTrax Piranha DC Peak Charger only accepts DC inputpower, which can be supplied by a 12V DC automotive battery orpower supply. Included with this charger is an adapter cablehaving a small white plug on one end and alligator clips on theopposite end. This is used to connect the charger to the inputbattery or power supply. Connect the input power cable to thecharger by inserting the small white connector into the rear, lefthand side of the charger. Next, connect the chargerís red alligatorclip to the positive (+) terminal on the 12V input battery or powersupply, and the black alligator clip to the negative (-) terminal onthe battery or power supply. When using a power supply on theinput, it is best to use one whose output is filtered to removeunwanted electrical noise. To achieve the maximum potential withthis charger, the source battery must be capable of delivering atleast 6 amps of current while maintaining 12V DC.INPUT POWERCARE & HANDLING INSTRUCTIONS FORNiMH BATTERIESIMPORTANT PRECAUTIONSSPECIAL FEATURESSPECIFICATIONSINTRODUCTIONôÆDC Peak Charger |
