But with General Electric’s recent entry (ourinterview with GE on this is here) into the consumerphotography space, we wondered how a digital novicewould find working with one of GE’s newest releases, theG1 branded as a GE product and marketed by GeneralImaging. So, we sent the camera off to Europe twicewith product tester and world traveler ReginaBarthmaier, who loves photography but hadn’t yetventured far into the digital realm. Regina used thecamera for two trips to Europe, including Italy, Paris, andAmsterdam, and in total took more then 700 photos. Herreport follows:I had never used a digital camera. As luck would have it,right before I was scheduled to leave for Fabriano, Italyfor a two-week Papermaking/Book Arts Intensive, HarrisFogel asked if I would be willing to test out a brand newdigital camera from GE, the G1. Of course, I jumped atthe opportunity.Harris walked me though the settings over lunch at Ted’sMontana Grill in downtown Philly, and I set off for Italythe next day. I have to say that I really liked the slimsize of the camera and it was very easy to focus andshoot. I especially love the zoom button because it is soconveniently located and a nice size for fingertipoperation. I went a “shooting spree.”The first setting I tried was the panoramic view. It worksgreat as long as you are just moving right or left. Myup/down panoramic shot did not work out too well, but Ishould probably have read that section in the instructionmanual. I tested the setting for shooting moving objectswhen our class took a field trip to Urbino. I was able toget several nice scenery shots from the moving car I wasin, and they were crisp and clear. I had a lot of fun andgot some really great results with the setting for nightscenes. It really made quite a difference in capturing thetrue atmosphere and lighting.Equipped with a 2 GB SD card, I took almost 500 picturesin Italy. I barely touched on all the menu settings andfunctions, so I am still going through the book and tryingout the different functions. To become proficient, I haveto practice, which justifies more Italian travel! One recent weekend back in the states, I had a couple ofparties to go to and decided that, in addition to takingpictures, I would master the movie function. I have tosay that the party guests actually remarked on thecompact size of the camera and the quality of thepictures, and I had a fabulous time making the videosand playing them back.Because the battery wears down pretty fast – which Ihave been told happens with all digital cameras – I willSearchsubscribe tomaceditionradio-newsO U R S P O N S O R S |
