This measurement is veryimportant in determining the corrosive characteristics of waterdue primarily to hydroxide, carbonate and bicarbonate ions.Other sources of alkalinity can be from anions that can behydrolyzed such as phosphate, silicate, borate, fluoride andsalts of some organic acids. Alkalinity is critical in the treat-ments of drinking water, wastewater, boiler & cooling systems. The Hanna Alkalinity Test Kit makes monitoring easy andquick. The compact size gives the user the versatility to usethe kit anywhere. The design makes the kit easy to handle.Note: 1 gpg (grains per gallon) CaCO3 is equivalent to 17ppm CaCO 3 (where ppm - parts per million - isequivalent to mg/L).SIGNIFICANCE AND USESIGNIFICANCE AND USESIGNIFICANCE AND USESIGNIFICANCE AND USESIGNIFICANCE AND USECHEMICAL REACTIONCHEMICAL REACTIONCHEMICAL REACTIONCHEMICAL REACTIONCHEMICAL REACTIONTotal Alkalinity is determined by neutralizing the sample toa pH of 4.5 using a dilute sulfuric acid solution and abromophenol blue indicator. This process converts hydroxideions to water, carbonate and bicarbonate ions to carbonicacid:2OH – +H2SO 4 → 2H 2 O+SO 42–2CO 32– +H2SO 4 → 2HCO 3– +SO 42–2HCO 3– +H2 SO 4 → 2H 2CO 3+SO 42–INSTRUCTIONSINSTRUCTIONSINSTRUCTIONSINSTRUCTIONSINSTRUCTIONSREAD ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE USING THE TEST KITDetermination of Total Alkalinity• Remove the cap from the plasticvessel. Rinse the plastic vessel withwater sample, fill to the 5 mLmark and replace the cap.• Through the cap port, add 1 drop of Bromophenol BlueIndicator and mix. If the solution is yellow, then it isacidic and an acidity test must be carried out (see HI 3820– Hanna Acidity Test Kit). If the solution is green orblue, then proceed to next step.• Take the syringe and pushthe plunger completely downinto the syringe. Insert tipinto the HI 38014-0 Alka-linity Reagent and pull theplunger out until the loweredge of the seal is on the0.0 mL mark of the syringe.• Place the syringe tip into the cap port of the plasticvessel and slowly add the titration solution drop bydrop, swirling after each drop.REFERENCESREFERENCESREFERENCESREFERENCESREFERENCESHEALTH AND SAFETYHEALTH AND SAFETYHEALTH AND SAFETYHEALTH AND SAFETYHEALTH AND SAFETYThe chemicals contained in this test kit may be hazardous ifimproperly handled.
