They may occur in householdand industrial wastewaters and in natural waters; they canalso enter potable water supplies and chlorination of suchwaters results in malodorous chlorophenol products that aredetectable from 0.001 mg/L (1 ppb). The HANNA colorimetricmethod determines phenol and all ortho and para substitutedphenols. Since substitution generally lowers the response, thereadable value obtained by this method is the minimumconcentration of phenolic compounds present. Natural waterusually contains less than 0.001 mg/L (ppb) of phenols, butsometimes values up to 0.02 mg/L (20 ppb) also occur.Since the concentration of phenols in wastewater is generallysubjected to biological and chemical degradation, preservesamples in the refrigerator and analyze within 4 hours aftercollection.Note: mg/L is equivalent to ppm (parts per million), ppb areparts per billion.SPECIFICATIONSSPECIFICATIONSSPECIFICATIONSSPECIFICATIONSSPECIFICATIONSSIGNIFICANCE AND USESIGNIFICANCE AND USESIGNIFICANCE AND USESIGNIFICANCE AND USESIGNIFICANCE AND USECHEMICAL REACTIONCHEMICAL REACTIONCHEMICAL REACTIONCHEMICAL REACTIONCHEMICAL REACTIONREAD THE ENTIRE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE USING THE KIT• Verify if the mirror and the LR (0÷1 mg/L) disc arealready pre-installed in the checker. The absorbance of this colored product is proportional tothe concentration of phenols present in the aqueous sample.• Fill each glass vial with 10 mL ofsample, up to the mark.• Insert one of them into the left hand opening of thechecker disc. This is the blank.• Add to the otherglass vial 1packet of HI3864A-0 Re-agent. Replacethe cap andmix.• Add 1 packet of HI 3864B-0 Reagent.• Start the waiting time of 10 minutes.Replace the cap andshake the vial until thepowder has totally dis-solved. The solution willturn a color yellow to or-ange. This is the reactedsample.• Remove the cap and in-sert the reacted sampleinto the right hand open-ing of the checker disc.• Hold the checker disc so thata light source illuminates thesamples from the top.• After the 10 minutes havepassed, rotate the disc while looking at the color testwindows and stop when you find the color match. Sus-pended matter in large amounts should be removedby prior filtration.Caution: Ultraviolet radiation may cause fading of colors. When not in use, keep the disc protected from light,in a cool and dry place. The chemicals contained in this kit may be hazardous ifimproperly handled.
