Thank you for your purchase of the NHT OutdoorOne loudspeaker. Pleasetake a few minutes to read through this Owner's Manual prior to installingyour new speakers. The information provided will help you to obtainmaximum performance from your audio system. If you have questions orneed assistance at any time during the installation or operation of your newspeakers, please call your NHT Dealer or our Toll-Free Customer Hotlineat:1-800-NHT-9993Please retain the OutdoorOne’s packaging to protect the speakerin the event that you move or transport it. DesignNHT loudspeakers are designed to deliver refined, musical sound from attractiveand affordable packages. Our efforts are guided by the study of human hearing andare optimized for real-world use. Every NHT speaker undergoes rigorous testingand quality control at the factory to ensure you years of listening pleasure. The OutdoorOne brings NHT sonic performance to outdoor environments, thanks toits proprietary molded enclosure, moisture-resistant drive units and aluminum grille. The OutdoorOne is easily mounted to walls with its customized mounting bracket(included) or alternately, it may be placed on horizontal surfaces using its rubberbase (also included). The acoustical properties of outdoor environments differ greatly from that of indoorenvironments, where there are typically six room boundaries to reinforce low fre-quency response. “Indoor/outdoor” speakers cannot offer optimized performancefor both due to the different acoustical requirements of each environment. Toaddress this problem, the OutdoorOne is designed specifically for outdoor use only. Its bass and lower midrange response is custom-tailored to compensate for the lackof boundary reinforcement, resulting in uncommonly rich, full-range sound in out-door environments. Additionally, the OutdoorOne has been engineered to withstandtemperatures ranging from -20 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. PlacementThe OutdoorOne is designed for outdoor use only and is not recommended for useindoors. The equivalent NHT model for indoor use is the SuperOne Xu.The OutdoorOne is primarily designed for wall-mounting with the supplied bracket. If one pair will be employed on either side of a targeted listening area (such as apatio or deck), we recommend mounting the speakers to either side, slightly toed-inand equidistant from the center of the listening area. This configuration will result inoptimal stereo imaging. If they are mounted above the listening area, angle themdown appropriately. If multiple OutdoorOnes will be mounted around the perimeterof a large area, attempt to install them equidistant from each other to achieveconsistent sound dispersion between them.Ideally, the front of the OutdoorOne should face the listening area without directobstruction from beams, joists, etc. To prolong the life of the speaker, avoidinstalling it where it will be exposed to direct rain or snow. If possible, install it belowan eave or overhang. Mounting BracketBefore attempting this installation, carefully evaluate the mounting surface, making sure that its composition and construction are strong enough tosupport the load safely. If you are unsure about the type or use of mountinghardware for your installation, consult a professional contractor or a knowl-edgeable hardware store. The OutdoorOne mounting bracket is suitable onlyfor attaching the speaker to walls or ceilings constructed of solid wood, brick-work, concrete, hollow building block, or wood studs. Do not mount thebracket to unreinforced plaster or drywall (sheetrock /gypsum board).See Fig. 1. Centered on the back panel of the OutdoorOne, just above the terminalcup, is a threaded insert designed to accommodate the ball stud which fastens thebracket to the speaker.1. Lossen the clamp just enough so you can remove the ball stud from the bracket.2. Twist the ball onto the threaded insert of the speaker until it’s snug3. Tighten the lock nut against the back of the speaker with a 7/16” wrench, thissecures the ball to the speaker.5. Attach the bracket base to the surface of where you want the speaker located.6. Reassemble the bracket so the ball is clamped by the jaws of the bracket.7. Adjust the speaker’s angle (see “Placement”). Once optimized, tighten the boltwith the hex wrench with sufficient force to hold the bracket firmly in position. BaseThe molded rubber base allows the OutdoorOne to rest firmly on horizontal surfacessuch as shelves or cabinets. Because the OutdoorOne’s enclosure is designed withidentical curvatures on all sides, the speaker may be placed on the base in any ori-entation (resting on either side, top or bottom panels). See Fig. 2 for setup options. The OutdoorOne should be tilted on the base so that it radiates sound directlytoward the listening area. ConnectionsBefore connecting speakers to your audio system, it is important that you turnoff the power to your amplifier / receiver to avoid damage to the equipment. The OutdoorOne is compatible with virtually all quality amplifiers. Proper wiring ofthe speakers is essential to good sound. At a minimum, 16AWG speaker cable isrecommended for runs of 10 feet or less, with heavier special purpose cable usedfor longer runs. For specialty cable considerations, consult your local authorizedNHT retailer.Prepare your speaker cable by stripping 1/4” to 3/8” of insulation from the ends andtwisting the exposed wire strands tightly. The five-way binding posts on the back ofthe speaker will accept bare wire, banana plugs or spade plugs. Tighten thebinding posts by hand, as pliers can strip or break them.Be sure to wire both the left and right speakers "in-phase." That is, thePositive (red) terminal on the amplifier output must be connected to the cor-responding Positive (red) terminal on the speaker. Likewise with the Negative(black) terminals. All speaker cables have some sort of marking along one or bothconductors to help you make the correct connections. Incorrect speaker phase isindicated by weak bass and the lack of a well-defined stereo image.BallStudBracketBaseFig. 2Fig. 1LockNutThreadedInsertBe sure to wire both the left and right speakers "in-phase."
