The light from the eyepiece is reflectedalong the optical axis of the telescope by a half-sil-vered mirror. Looking through the eyepiece, you willsee the cross-hairs of the graticule lighted up as theyscatter some of the light back into the eyepiece.Ã Mount the grating holder to the spectrometer table andinsert the diffraction grating.Ä Looking through the telescope, rotate the table until apatch of light reflects back through the telescope fromthe grating’s glass surfaces. (The spectrometer tableand the telescope must be at least roughly level to ac-complish this.)Å Adjust the focus of the telescope until the cross-hairsand their reflected images are in sharp focus. As theglass slides of the grating are not efficient reflectors, the images are not bright and you must look carefullyto see them.ä IMPORTANT: The grating is sandwichedbetween two glass slides so, depending on howparallel the slides are, you may see as many as fourreflected images of the cross-hairs. In the follow-ing steps, you will be instructed to superimpose thegraticule with its reflected image. If there is morethan one image, just center the cross-hairs asaccurately as possible between the images.Æ Use the spectrometer table fine adjust screw to alignthe vertical cross-hair of the graticule with its reflectedimage.Ç Adjust the spectrometer tables leveling screws untilthe graticule cross-hairs are superimposed on the re-flected image.GAUSSIAN EYEPIECE115 VAC, 60 Hz or220/240 VAC, 50 Hz(220 V model shown)IntroductionThe PASCO Model SP-9285 Gaussian Eyepiece is usedas an option to simplify the task of aligning and focusingthe spectrometer and aligning the diffraction grating. It isoptically equivalent to the 15X Ramsden eyepieceincluded with the spectrometer (Model SP-9268). Afterusing the Gaussian eyepiece for aligning the spectrometerit may then be replaced with the standard eyepiece fornormal use. This allows using a single Gaussian eyepiecein aligning any number of spectrometers. To align and focus the spectrometer using theGaussian eyepiece:À Remove the telescope eyepiece and replace it with theGaussian eyepiece.Á While looking through the telescope, slide the eye-piece in and out until the graticule cross-hairs comeinto sharp focus. Rotate the graticule alignment ringuntil one line of the graticule is vertical. Refocus ifnecessary.© 1990 PASCO scientificThis instruction sheet written/edited by: Dave Griffith
