Dear Brain Gamers,I am delighted that you are one of the millions ofpeople who want to keep their minds sharp and havefun doing it. After two decades studying how we canimprove memory and prevent Alzheimer’s disease, Ihave found there is a lot we can do. Genetics accountsfor only about a third of what determines our healthas we age – that means that simple, everyday lifestylechoices have a major impact on our memory and brainfitness. My books, The Memory Bible, The MemoryPrescription, and The Longevity Bible, detail my strate-gies – physical and mental exercise, stress reductiontechniques, the Healthy Brain Diet, and more – to boostyour brain power and live longer, better. However, youare well on your way to boosting your brain power byplaying Brain Games.Brain Games will teach you my basic memory tech-nique – Look, Snap, Connect – and help you perfectthese strategies. Besides being fun to play, BrainGames will help your memory abilities improve almostimmediately. You will also “cross-train” your brain withleft-brain (verbal memory and logical skills – e.g., writ-ing letters) and right-brain (visual memory and mentalskills – e.g., reading maps) games. Brain Games letsyou monitor your progress, while setting and increasinga pace that works for your memory ability as you trainyour brain and gauge your improvement. You can use Look, Snap, Connect for everyday memorytasks (lists, errands, names and faces) and build onthis basic technique to become a memory champion.First master the basic skill:• Look – learn to focus your attention on the newinformation you wish to remember. Slow down, takea deep breath, and ignore distractions.• Snap – create a mental snapshot or visual imagein your mind’s eye of what you want to remember.Make it personal and give it detail to help fix it intoyour memory.• Connect – link up your mental snapshots in youmind’s eye. This association step helps put the newmemories into context and helps you retrieve themlater when you need them.To remember a list of errands, create a story usingLook, Snap, Connect: You need to stop at the store toget some aspirin and a hair brush before you meet yoursister. In your mind’s eye, you see your sister takingsome aspirin and then brushing her hair. For learning and recalling names and faces, thinkup a Name Snap and a Face Snap – then Connectthese mental pictures or Snaps together. Thinking ofa visual image or Snap for a name can be easy: Seea house for Mr. House, a gold coin for Ms. Gold, or acarnival worker for Mrs. Carney. For more complexnames, combine visual words that sound like thename – see Mr. Domachow eating chicken chow meinunder a dome. For a face snap, look for a distinguish-ing feature and then connect it to the name snap. IfMrs. Washington has prominent lips, see her kissingGeorge Washington on the lips. At first it may seem abit wacky; however, you’ll not only have fun but you’llimprove your everyday memory skills. Remember-ing names and faces is the most common memorycomplaint. Our research group at UCLA has studied the effective-ness of Look, Snap, Connect, along with other lifestylestrategies that improve memory and brain health. Wefound that after only two weeks, these techniques havea significant effect on memory performance scoresand dramatically increase brain efficiency. The moreyou play Brain Games, the better you’ll get at it and themore brain power you’ll have.To find out more about the creation of Brain Games, visit www.drgarysmall.com and www.brainstorm-inginc.com.Have fun,Dr. Gary SmallReady to Cross-Train Your Brain!Brain Games is a mind stimulating activity for yourbrain.
