4 Power/Self Test LEDThe Power/Self test LED shows a number of conditions:Rear Panel Connections5 Power SupplyThe Baseline 10/100 Switch automatically adjusts to the supplyvoltage. Only use the power cord that is supplied with the Baseline10/100 Switch, or a power cord of the same type.6 Socket for Redundant Power SystemOnly connect a 3Com SuperStack II Advanced Redundant PowerSystem (3C16070) to this socket. An appropriate power module andcable is required. The connector on the Baseline 10/100 Switch is aType 2 socket. For details, follow the installation instructions in theguides that accompany the Advanced Redundant Power System andthe power module.7 Self-adhesive PadsThe unit is supplied with four self-adhesive rubber pads.You do not need to apply the pads if you intend to rack orwall mount the unit.If the unit is to be part of a free standing stack, apply the pads toeach marked corner area on the underside of the unit. Place the uniton top of the lower unit, ensuring that the pads locate with therecesses of the lower unit.Positioning the Baseline 10/100 SwitchCAUTION: If installing the Baseline 10/100 Switch in a stackof different size units, the smaller units must be installedabove the larger ones. Do not have a free standing stack ofmore than six units.When deciding where to position the Baseline 10/100 Switch ensure:Q It is accessible and cables can be connected easily.Q Cabling is away from sources of electrical noise such as radios,transmitters and broadband amplifiers, and away from powerlines and fluorescent lighting fixtures.Q Water or moisture cannot enter the case of the unit.Q Air flow around the unit and through the vents in the side ofthe case is not restricted (3Com recommend that you providea minimum of 25mm (1in.) clearance).To prolong the operational life of your units:Q Never stack units more than six high if free standing, andensure that cables are supported so that they do not cause thestack to fall over.Q Do not place objects on top of any unit or stack.Q Do not obstruct any vents at the sides of the case.Rack or Wall MountingThe Baseline 10/100 Switch can be mounted in a 19-inch equipmentrack, or wall mounted using the Mounting Kit. Refer to “MountingKit Instructions” on page 5.Power UpUse the following sequence to power up the Baseline 10/100 Switch:Q Check the network connections and cables.Q Connect the power supply cable to the appropriate powersocket on the rear panel of the unit; refer to 5 or 6.Q Connect the plug to the power supply outlet socket andswitch on the power supply at the socket. If you are using theAdvanced Redundant Power System, ensure it is powered on.When the Baseline 10/100 Switch is powered on, the Power/Self TestLED should be lit. If it is not, refer to 4.Spot ChecksAt frequent intervals you should visually check the Baseline10/100 Switch. Regular checks can give you an early warning of apossible failure; any problems can then be attended to when therewill be least effect on users. Check the following:Problem SolvingRefer to the information about LEDs given earlier in this guide to seeif the problem can be identified and rectified. Here are somecommon problems that can occur:Status LED not lit for a port that has a connection. There is aproblem with this connection. Check that:Q The device being connected to is powered on and operatingcorrectly.Q The cable is connected at both ends.Q That you are using a Category 5 cable that is:Q ‘Straight-through’ if connecting to an MDI port.Q ‘Cross-over’ if connecting to an MDIX port.Q The cable is not damaged.All Traffic LEDs appear to be lit continually. There may bebroadcast storms on the network. Remove port connections one at atime, waiting a few seconds between each port. If the LEDs go offafter removing a port connection, the device that was connected tothat port is introducing an excessive amount of broadcast frames tothe network (some pieces of network equipment operate by sendingout broadcast frames regularly). Refer to the documentation thataccompanies the device for information on disabling the broadcastoperation.If the problem persists and the unit still does not operatesuccessfully, contact your supplier with the following informationbefore returning the unit:Q Product number and serial number (printed on a label suppliedwith the unit)Q A brief description of the faultGreen The unit is powered on and ready for use.FlashinggreenThe unit is performing its self test after being poweredon. If the LED is still flashing green 1 minute after powerup, there is a fault. Contact your supplier.Yellow The unit has failed its self test. Power off the unit, waitfive seconds and power on the unit. Contact yoursupplier if the LED continues to light yellow.Off The unit is powered off or the LED has failed.If the unit is operating and the LED has failed, contactyour supplier. Otherwise:Q Check the power cable is connected correctly.Q There may be a problem with the fuse within thepower cable’s plug: try replacing the cable with onefrom another unit.Q If the unit still does not operate, it may be that theinternal fuse is broken: contact your supplier.iCabling Check that all external cabling connections aresecure and that no cables are pulled taut.Cooling fans Where possible, check that the cooling fans areoperating by listening to the unit. The fans arefitted near to the front right hand side of the unit(when viewed from the front).3 |
