Numbered elements in this diagram refer to numbered sections inthe text. A 24-port unit is shown.Front Panel1 24 RJ-45 10/100 PortsWARNING: RJ-45 ports. These are shielded RJ-45 datasockets. They cannot be used as standard traditionaltelephone sockets, or to connect the unit to a traditionalPBX or public telephone network. Only connect RJ-45data connectors, network telephony systems, or networktelephones to these sockets. Either shielded or unshieldeddata cables with shielded or unshielded jacks can beconnected to these data sockets.AVERTISSEMENT: Les ports RJ-45. To connect a device to the Switch, useCategory 5 unshielded or shielded (screened) 100 Ohm TP cable(or Category 3 cable for a 10 Mbps connection). The maximumlength of cable for each connection is 100m (328ft). Connect oneend of the cable to an RJ-45 port on the Switch, and the otherend to the appropriate RJ-45 port on the connecting device. Each port on the Switch is auto-negotiating: its speed and duplexmode (half duplex or full duplex) are automatically determined bythe capabilities of the connected device. Each port supports automatic MDI/MDI-X detection and can beconnected to either a 10BASE-T or a 100BASE-TX device.I f you connect two Switch units together, the linkbetween them operates at 100 Mbps full duplex. Youmust use Category 5 cable when connecting the units.CAUTION: The Switch supports full duplex auto-negotia-tion. If the connected device does not support auto-nego-tiation, the Switch will operate in half duplex mode (evenif the device is operating in full duplex mode). In such aconfiguration, you may notice some degradation of net-work performance. 3Com recommends that you usedevices that are capable of auto-negotiation (and thatyou ensure that auto-negotiation is enabled, if it is a con-figurable option).2 Activity/Link/Speed Status LEDsThe first (top) and third row of LEDs, which are colored yellow orgreen, show the activity and speed status of the related ports:3 Duplex Status LEDsThe second and fourth (bottom) row of Status LEDs, which arecolored yellow, show the duplex status of the related ports:H OW TO USE THE 2016/2024 S WITCH12 3 46 5161134175 8209 1221 24Baseline Switch 2024Status MeaningOn The link has been established.Flashing Packets are being received or transmitted on the port.Off If the link has not been established, either nothing isconnected to the port, or there is a problem:■ Check that the attached device is powered on.■ Check that the cable is the correct type and is not faulty. If these checks do not identify the cause of the problem, itmay be that the unit or the device connected to the port isfaulty.
