26 CHAPTER 3: INSTALLING THE R OUTERTo configure the router through the console terminal:1 Turn off power to the router.2 Select a console terminal — The console port can be either a standard ASCIIterminal with an RS-232 serial interface, or a PC.3 Connect the cable — Turn the power switch off, and then connect the RS-232serial interface of the console cable to the console port of the router. After the connection and verification, power on the router. The startupinformation of the router is displayed on the console terminal.Connecting the Routerto the EthernetThe Router 3000 series routers provide a fixed 10/100BASE-TX fast Ethernetinterface that uses category-5 twisted pair cable, as shown in Figure 5Figure 5 Ethernet Cable AssemblyThe Ethernet cables are classified as straight-through network cable and crossovernetwork cable. They have the following features:■ Straight-through network cable — The sequences of the wires crimped at theRJ-45 connectors of the two ends are the same. The cable is used in theconnection between a terminal device, such as a PC or a router, and the Hub orLAN Switch. Straight-through network cables are delivered along with therouter.■ Crossover network cable — The sequences of the wires crimped at the RJ-45connectors of the two ends are different. The cable is used in the connectionbetween the terminal device, such as a PC or a router, and another terminaldevice. You can create this cable yourself, if necessary. For the pinouts, identification and making of the two network cables, seeAppendix A. Take the following considerations into account before you connect:■ The fixed Ethernet cables are included in the standard configuration of therouter.■ Use shielded cables to ensure electromagnetic compatibility.■ Identify the mark on the module port so you can plug the cable in correctly.■ When connecting the Ethernet cable to a LAN Switch, plug the cable into the10/100BASE-T interface marked with MDIX.To connect the Ethernet cable:1 Turn off power to the router.2 Select the Ethernet cable. When connecting the router with a PC or a router, use the crossover networkcable.
