Handling the ModuleThe Module can be easily damaged by electrostaticdischarge. To prevent damage, observe the following: Always wear an anti-static wristband connected to asuitable earth point. Do not remove the Module from its packaging untilyou are ready to install it into a Switch. Do not touch any of the pins, connections orcomponents on the Module. Handle the Module only by its edges and front panel. Always store or transport the Module in anti-staticpackaging.Installing the Module into a SwitchCAUTION: This Module is not hot-insertable orhot-swappable. Always make sure that the Switch ispowered down and disconnected from the mains beforeinstalling or removing a Module. Use the followinginstructions when installing or removing a Module.CAUTION: This Module is only designed to work withthe 3Com SuperStack 3 Switch 4900 Series.To install the Module:1 Ensure that the Switch is disconnected from the mainspower supply and RPS connector (if applicable) and thatyou are wearing an anti-static wristband connected to asuitable earth point.2 Undo the three screws securing the blanking plate at therear of the Switch using a suitable screwdriver. Do notremove any other screws from the rear of the Switch.3 Remove the blanking plate.4 Keep the blanking plate and screws in a safe place. Ifyou remove the Module at any time, you must replacethe blanking plate to prevent dust and debris enteringthe Switch and to help the circulation of cooling air.5 Hold the Module so that the text on the front panel isupright. Insert it into the Switch, pushing firmly toensure the Module is seated correctly so that thebackpanel is flush with the back of the Switch. Tightenthe three captive thumbscrews securing the Module witha suitable tool.Activating the Module1 Ensure that the Switch is powered-up.2 Insert one of the following transceivers into a GBICexpansion port on the Module: 1000BASE-SX GBIC transceiverUse this transceiver to connect the Module directly tomultimode fiber-optic cable. 1000BASE-LX GBIC transceiverUse this transceiver to connect the Module directly toa single-mode fiber-optic cable or to multimode fiberusing a conditioned launch cable. 1000BASE-LH70 GBIC transceiverUse this transceiver to connect the Module directly toa single-mode fiber-optic cable or to multimode fiberusing a conditioned launch cable.To ensure optimal performance, compatibility, andregulatory compliance, use only GBIC transceivers that3Com supports. See “Approved GBIC Transceivers” onpage 4.a Orient the transceiver so that the fiber-optic duplexsubscriber connector (SC) is toward you.b Gently slide the transceiver into the GBIC port until itclicks into place.CAUTION: GBIC transceivers are keyed and can beproperly inserted only one way. If the transceiver doesnot click when you insert it, remove it, turn it over, andreinsert it.GBIC transceivers are hot-insertable and hot-swappable.You can remove them from and insert them into anyport on the Module without having to power down theSwitch.3 The transceiver connects to the network using theduplex SC connector. Attach the male duplex SCconnector on the network cable into the duplex SCconnector on the transceiver.4 Connect the other end of the fiber-optic cable to adevice fitted with an appropriate Gigabit Ethernetconnection.5 Check the LEDs on the front of the Switch and the rearof the Module to ensure that the Module is operatingcorrectly. Refer to “LEDs” on page 1 for moreinformation.Removing a Transceiver from the ModuleTo replace an existing GBIC transceiver, compress theside tabs and gently pull the transceiver out of the port.GBIC transceivers are hot-insertable and hot-swappable.You can remove them from and insert them into anyport on the Module without having to power down theSwitch.Removing the Module from a Switch1 Ensure that the power supply and the backboneconnection cables are disconnected from the Switch.2 Undo the three captive thumbscrews securing theModule into the Switch using a suitable tool. Do notremove any other screws from the Switch.3 Remove the Module.4 If you are not fitting another Module immediately,replace the blanking plate to ensure that dust and debrisdo not enter the Switch and to help the circulation ofcooling air.INSTALLATION A ND REMOVAL!!!3 |
