18Bearings are a primary concern on pumpingunits. First, dismantle the bearings; clean andinspect them for any rusted or badly wornsurfaces. If bearings are free from rust andwear, reassemble and relubricate them withone of the recommended pump lubricants.Depending on the length of time the pumphas remained in the flooded area, it is unlikelythat bearing replacement is necessary;however, in the event that rust or wornsurfaces appear, it may be necessary toreplace the bearings.Next, inspect the stuffing box, and clean outany foreign matter that might clog the box.Mechanical seals should be cleaned andthoroughly flushed.Couplings should be dismantled andthoroughly cleaned.Any pump that is properly sealed at all jointsand connected to both the suction anddischarge should exclude outside liquid. Therefore, it should not be necessary to gobeyond the bearings, stuffing box, andcoupling when servicing the pump.BEARING LUBRICATION – GREASEGrease lubricated ball bearings are packedwith grease at the factory and ordinarily willrequire no attention before starting, providedthe pump has been stored in a clean, dryplace prior to its first operation. The bearingsshould be watched the first hour or so afterthe pump has been started to see that theyare operating properly. The importance of proper lubrication cannotbe over emphasized. It is difficult to say howoften a bearing should be greased, since thatdepends on the conditions of operation. It iswell to add one ounce of grease at regularintervals, but it is equally important to avoidadding too much grease. For averageoperating conditions, it is recommended that1 oz. of grease be added at intervals of threeto six months, and only clean grease beused. It is always best if unit can be stoppedwhile grease is added to avoid overloading.NOTE: Excess grease is the most commoncause of over-heating.A lithium based NLGI-2 grade grease shouldbe used for lubricating bearings where theambient temperature is above -20°F. Greaselubricated bearings are packed at the factorywith Shell Alvania No 2. Other recommendedgreases are Texaco Multifak No. 2 andMobilux No. 2 grease.Greases made from animal or vegetable oilsare not recommended due to the danger ofdeterioration and forming of acid. Do not usegraphite. Use of an ISO VG 100 mineral baseoil with rust and oxidation inhabitors isrecommended. The maximum desirable operatingtemperature for ball bearings is 180°F.Should the temperature of the bearing framerise above 180°F, the pump should be shutdown to determine the cause.PACKING SEALWhen a pump with packing is first started it isadvisable to have the packing slightly loosewithout causing an air leak. As the pump runsin, gradually tighten the gland bolts evenly. The gland should never be drawn to the pointwhere packing is compressed too tightly andno leakage occurs. This will cause thepacking to burn, score the shaft sleeve andprevent liquid from circulating through thestuffing box cooling the package.NOTE: Eccentric run-out of the shaft orsleeve through the packing could result inexcessive leakage that cannot becompensated for. Correction of this defectrequires shaft and/or sleeve replacement.Packing should be checked frequently andreplaced as service indicates. Six monthsmight be a reasonable expected life, depending on the operating conditions.CLEANING WITHOUT DISMANTLING PUMPA short section of pipe so designed that it canbe readily dropped out of the line can beinstalled adjacent to the suction flange. Withthis arrangement, any matter clogging theimpeller is accessible by removing the pipesection. If the pump cannot be freed of clogging afterthe above methods have been tried, dismantle the unit as previously described tolocate the trouble.
