The zone-of-protection of a line differential protectionsystem is the feeder section defined by thelocation of the current transformers in thelocal and the remote substation.Combining horizontal GOOSEcommunication over a station bus and binarysignal transfer over the protectioncommunication link offers new applicationpossibilities beyond traditional linedifferential protection. One interestingapplication based on inter-substation signaltransfer is loss-of-mains (LOM) protection innetworks with distributed generation. Theperformance of the combination of binarysignal transfer and horizontal GOOSEcommunication performance as to speed,selectivity and reliability are hard to matchwith conventional loss-of-mains protection.RED615 is the ideal IED for the protection offeeders in network configurations containingclosed loops. Under normal operatingconditions the feeder loop is closed. The aimof the closed loop is to secure the availabilityof power for the end users. As a result of theclosed loop configuration, any fault spot inthe system will be fed with fault current fromtwo directions. Using plain overcurrentprotection, either directional or non-directional, it is difficult to obtain fast andselective short circuit protection.
