It is configured with complete protectionfunctionality and default parameters to meet the needs of a widerange of applications for generation, transmission and sub-transmission grids.The 650 series IEDs include:• Customized versions providing the possibility to adapt thefunctionality to the application needs for protection and controlin one IED.• Configured versions solutions are completely ready to use andoptimized for a wide range of applications for generation,transmission and sub-transmission grids.• Support for user-defined names in the local language for signaland function engineering.• Minimized rule based parameter settings based on defaultvalues and ABB's global base value concept. ApplicationREL650 is used for the protection, control and monitoring ofoverhead lines and cables in solidly or impedance groundednetworks. The IED can be used up to the high voltage levels. It issuitable for the protection of heavily loaded lines and multi-terminal lines where the requirement for fast one- and/or three-pole tripping is wanted. Apparatus control for up to 8 apparatuseswith interlocking can be included in one IED by function blockengineering.The full scheme distance protection provides protection of powerlines with high sensitivity and low requirement on remote endcommunication. The five zones have fully independent measuringand setting which gives high flexibility for all types of lines. Loadencroachment and adaptive reach compensation are included.The modern technical solution offers fast operating time oftypically 30 ms.The multi-shot autoreclose includes priority features for double-breaker arrangements. It co-operates with the synchronismcheck function with high-speed or delayed reclosing.High set instantaneous phase and ground overcurrent, four stepdirectional or non-directional delayed phase and groundovercurrent, thermal overload and two step under andovervoltage protection are examples of the available functionsallowing the user to fulfill any application requirement.The distance phase and ground fault protection, and thedirectional ground overcurrent protection can communicate withremote end in any teleprotection communication scheme.The advanced logic capability, where the user logic is preparedwith a graphical tool, allows special applications.Disturbance recording and fault locator are available to allowindependent post-fault analysis after primary disturbances.Three packages of configured solution have been defined forfollowing applications:• Five zone distance protection with quadrilateral and mhocharacteristic, three-phase tripping (A01A)• Five zone distance protection with quadrilateral and mhocharacteristic, double breaker, three-phase tripping (B01A)• Five zone distance protection with quadrilateral and mhocharacteristic, single-pole tripping (A11A)The packages are configured and they usually need only a simplecustomization. Analog inputs and binary input/output signals arepre-defined for basic use. Other signals may be required by eachparticular application.Add binary I/O boards as required for the application whenordering.The graphical configuration tool ensures simple and fast testingand commissioning.Also the customized version is available, andthe selection of the hardware and of the required protectionfunctions can be done as defined in the Ordering for CustomizedIED section below.
