www.ACOEnvironment.us41. Safety considerationsThe safety guidelines in this chapter are tobe read before using the separator. Seriousinjuries or death could occur as a result ofmisuse.1.1 Designated use1.1.1 Areas of ApplicationOleopator separators are designedto remove mineral light liquids fromwastewater.Applications where mineral oils or minerallight liquids are able to enter the sewersystem should have separator systemsconnected downstream from drainagecollection points. Such applications includepetrol stations, parking lots, roadways, carwashes, engine washes, garages, vehiclerecycling, scrap yards, fueling stations, tankpits and transformer stations.Stormwater from areas where no lightliquids accumulate, such as roofs andcourtyards, should not be fed intoseparator.Separators should be installed such thatno light liquids can escape in the eventof backflow from the sewer or automaticclosure of the float. An automatic alarmmay be required. Regulations may vary bystate.1.1.2 LimitationsThe separators are not to be installed forresidential wastewater. When delivering waste water into the publicsewer system, the local hydrocarbon limitsshould be observed. Further treatment maybe required.1.1.3 Foreseeable misuseNo substances that pollute the water or limitthe functionality of the separator should beintroduced into the separator. This is particularly important in regard to:• wastewater containing feces,• wastewater containing animal orvegetable greases,• wastewater in which a considerableamount of stable emulsions is present.1.2 Qualifications of personnelAll work performed on the separatorequipment is to be carried out by trainedpersonnel.1.3 Personal safety equipmentPersonal safety equipment is necessary fora variety of works on the separator.1.4 Responsibility of ownerThe owner is responsible for complying withthe following points:• Only operate the separator according toregulations and in proper condition• Ensure that function of protectiondevices is not impaired• Adhere to a scheduled maintenanceprogram and immediately repair faults.Only repair faults yourself if themeasures are described in theseoperating instructions. Contact ACO forall other measures• Inspect data plate on the separator forcompleteness and legibility• Adequate personal safety equipmentmust be available and used• Provide complete and legible operatinginstructions at the separator’s site ofinstallation and training based on this• Only employ qualified and authorizedpersonnel.Health & SafetySafety instructions are intended toprevent damage to equipment or injury topersonnel and must be read before anymaintenance is performed. The separated oils and any vapors areflammable and/or combustible so caremust be taken whenever the system isopened.• All safety instruction labels must bereplaced if they become detached orillegible.• Gas concentrations MUST be testedbefore entering the separator;breathing apparatus is recommendedfor all personnel entering separator.• Safety lines, harness and radios/whistles are advised if enteringseparator.• Smoking and naked lights arestrictly forbidden anywhere in areasurrounding the system.• Installed devices (e.g. baffles, inlet and outlet parts, coalescenceelement, etc.) are intended foroperation of separator system andare not load bearing - they mustnot be used as steps, footholds orresting places for cleaning equipmentetc.• The separator system is definedas a zone 0 explosion hazard area.Only authorized, properly trained, personnel are permitted to performwork on the electrical components ofthe separator (where used).• Contact with wastewater containinglight liquids, e.g. during maintenance, can lead to dry, irritated skin, skininfections, headaches, dizziness, nausea, vision problems, loss ofconsciousness, and, in serious cases, death. Ensure proper protectiveclothing is used and immediatelywash any exposed skin.
