Based on industrystandard D4 technology, the ACT 1900 accom-modates a wide variety of low-cost channelunits from numerous suppliers. IntelligentADTRAN channel units, which provide DS0performance monitoring and remote provi-sioning capabilities, complement theadvanced functionality of the ACT 1900.The ACT 1900 benefits from a reducedcommon equipment section consisting ofonly three common units: Bank ControllerUnit (BCU), Line Interface Unit (LIU), andPower Supply Unit (PSU). The BCU is anintelligent controller for the bank providingnon-intrusive communications to the channelunits, control of the multiple communicationsports, and storage of alarm, provisioning, andperformance information. The communica-tions ports consist of a local craft interfacefor terminal control, a modem access port,and an RS-485 interface to the ADTRAN SiteManager for management of multiple banks.Enhancing the control and maintainabilityof the ACT 1900, the ADTRAN Site Managerprovides centralized management for asmany as 500 channel banks. It is a low cost,Network Equipment Building Standard (NEBS)compliant, VME-based computer, whichconnects to the ACT 1900s over a two-wire,addressable RS-485 communications link.The Site Manager also provides an interfaceto various Operations Support Systems (OSS)such as Bellcore’s NMA and OPS/INE foralarm reporting, trouble isolation, and flow-through provisioning of intelligent ADTRANchannel units. Several protocols and connec-tions are available for flexibility and networkintegration including TL1, SNMP, and aninternal X.25 interface for WAN management.The ACT 1900 monitors both the DS1performance as well as the DS0 performanceat the channel unit level. ADTRAN intelligentPerformance Monitoring, or PM, channelunits monitor the performance of the localloop to the customer’s equipment and non-intrusively report the data collected to theBCU for storage for a maximum of seven days.The PM units are also provisionable eitherlocally or remotely using the BCU craft inter-face and Site Manager, respectively. Sixintelligent PM units are available: OCUDP/PM, DS0 DP/PM, U-BR1TE PM, E&M/TOPM, FXO/DPT PM, AND FXS/DPO PM.
