STARTING THE ENGINETo start the engine press the brake pedal:the system engages neutral (N) automati-cally.After the starting procedure, the 1st speed(1) or reverse (R) can be engaged.Independently of the mode (AUTO/MANUAL), to engage the 1st speed or thereverse (R), it is necessary to depress thebrake pedal and press the button 1 onthe transmission panel and the button R toengage the 1st speed and the reverse re-spectively.The levers on the steering wheel work on-ly if the 1st speed has been engaged bypressing the button 1: setting off in 2 ndspeed is therefore possible by operatingthe “+“ lever with brake pedal depressed(in this case the selected mode AUTO/MANUAL is kept active).IMPORTANT The 1st speed cannot be en-gaged by pressing the lever “−” on thesteering wheel.Important notesIf start-up is requested with the gearboxfaulty, run the “Delayed startup” proce-dure (see paragraph “Warning lights andmessages”): if the ignition key is turned tothe AVV position for at least 7 secondswith brake pedal depressed, the enginewill be started. The system will remain ina recovery situation (highest permittedgear 3rd, Automatic mode not available). If the engine does not start, contact anAbarth Dealership. When the driver’s door is opened, thesystem activates the hydraulics so thatthey are prepared for the subsequent en-gine starting.LEVERS ON THE STEERINGWHEEL fig. 16These enable sequential gear shifting. The lever “+” on the steering wheel en-gages a higher gear, while the lever “–” en-gages a lower gear. The engagement of a lower (or higher) gearis only permitted if the engine revs allow it.fig. 16 F0S0159m14603_97_890 ABARTH 500C GB 1ed 31-05-2010 10:54 Pagina 14
