These sections contain important ESDprecautions along with pre-installation and post-installation procedures.ESD precautionsElectrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage static-sensitive hardwarecomponents, such as the processor, disk drives, and the system board.Always observe the following precautions before you install a servercomponent:• Do not remove a component from its protective packaging until you areready to install it.• Do not touch the component pins, leads, or circuitry.• Components with a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) assembly shouldalways be laid with the assembly-side down.• Wear a wrist grounding strap and attach it to a metal part of the serverbefore handling components. If a wrist strap is not available, maintaincontact with the server throughout any procedure requiring ESDprotection.• Keep the work area free of nonconductive materials, such as ordinaryplastic assembly aids and foam packing.Pre-installation instructionsPerform the steps below before you open the server or before your removeor replace any component.Warning! Failure to properly turn off the server before you startperform any hardware configuration may cause serious damage andbodily harm. Do not attempt the procedures described in the followingsections unless you are a qualified service technician.1 Turn off the server and all connected peripherals.2 Unplug all power cables from their outlets.3 Disconnect all telecommunication cables from their ports.4 Place the server on a flat, stable surface.
