Extended BIOS Translationis used only with MS-DOS 5.0 or above. You do notneed to enable this option if you are using anotheroperating system such as NetWare or UNIX.Caution: If you decide to change the translationscheme, back up your disk drives first! All datais erased when you change from one translationscheme to another. The standard translation scheme for SCSI hostadapters provides a maximum accessible capacity of1 GByte. To support disk drives larger than 1 GByte, the AHA-1520B includes an extended translationscheme. This scheme, under MS-DOS, supports 2GBytes partitions on disk drives as large as 8 GBytes. When you partition a disk under BIOS control largerthan 1 GByte, use the MS-DOS fdisk utility as younormally would. (Because the cylinder size increasesto 8 MBytes under extended translation, the partitionsize you choose must be a multiple of 8 MBytes. Ifyou request a size that is not a multiple of 8 MBytes, fdisk rounds up to the nearest whole multiple of 8MBytes.)Need Assistance?Troubleshooting ChecklistMost problems that occur with your host adapter resultfrom errors in preparing and connecting devices on theSCSI bus. If you have problems when using your hostadapter, check these items first.n Are all SCSI devices powered?n Are all SCSI bus cables and power cables properlyconnected?n Is the host adapter firmly seated and secured in anexpansion slot?n Is pin-1 orientation maintained throughout the SCSIbus? (See Step 6 on page 3.)n Do the host adapter and all devices on the SCSI bushave unique SCSI IDs? (See Step 4 on page 3, andStep 10 on page 4.)n Are all devices on the SCSI bus terminated properly?(See Step 4 on page 3, and Step 10 on page 4.)n Is parity checking consistently enabled or disabled onall devices (including the host adapter) on the SCSIbus? (See Basic Host Adapter Settings on page 9.)If you still have problems after checking the above items, continue with the following sections.Common Problems and SolutionsWhen the Adaptec BIOS header message appears, it hangs my system.Make sure the SCSI hard drives at SCSI ID 0 and 1 areproperly terminated. Check for possible resource con-flicts between the host adapter and other cards installedin your computer; the cards may have conflicting BIOSaddress, I/O port address, DMA channel, and IRQ set-tings. Make sure Shadow RAM is not enabled in yourcomputer’s CMOS setup program.
