A xis Communications is with-out doubt one of the biggestmanufacturers in the field ofnetwork cameras, and sinceits creation in 1994 the com-pany has delivered many innovativedesigns to the market. Its latest 221Network Camera takes surveillance tothe next level as not only can it functionin any lighting condition, but it alsooffers simultaneous, Motion-JPEG andMPEG-4 playback with support forPower over Ethernet, with one of thefastest frame rates currently available.Build quality is superb as the alumini-um body is very well engineered. It usesa decent Pentax lens with manual focusand zoom controls and the small powercable on the body allows the camera toautomatically adjust the iris for chang-ing lighting conditions. The bundled IPUtility makes installation a cinch, as itsearches the network for Axis camerasand displays them ready for initial con-figuration. Once it has an IP addressassigned, you can access the cameravia Internet Explorer over HTTP orsecure HTTPS sessions. The browser interface is very easy touse and opens with a live view. The 221employs a Sony progressive scan CCDsensor, as opposed to the interlacedvarieties used in analogue cameras -and it shows, as once the focus hadbeen adjusted correctly, we found over-all picture quality the best we've yetseen from any IP camera. Supportedframe rates are out of this world as the221 runs at up to 45 frames per second(fps) for all supported resolutions andcan even deliver 60fps at the lower 480x 360 pixel setting. The bottom line isthat this allows the 221 to deliver anextremely smooth video feed which canpick up even fast moving objects. In Motion-JPEG playback, up to twentyusers can access the camera simulta-neously; user and group administrationmaintained on the camera determinewhether they can simply view the imageor access the camera controls. There'sno user limit in multicast MPEG-4mode, but bear in mind that each userwill require a valid license. Bandwidthconsumption can be a concern foradministrators, but a number of optionsare provided for limiting the impactthese cameras can have on the net-work. Selecting a lower resolution helps, but image compression can beincreased - and you can also determinethe length of time the video stream isactive for and limit the frame rate formultiple viewers. The camera incorporates an infra-redsensor, allowing it to switch to a monoimage in very low light levels; and Axisoffers optional infra-red illuminators, sothat areas can be discretely monitoredin the pitch black. A removable IR-cutfilter is also fitted, allowing colourimages to be displayed under IR light-ing. This can be removed if you want ahigh quality mono image at nightinstead. Motion detection also comesinto the frame, and you can specify upto ten areas in the video image whereyou want motion to be detected orignored. The size and position of eachobject can be customised, as can thecamera sensitivity and how long detec-tion is to be triggered for. Event actionsare comprehensive, as motion triggerscan be used to download images to anFTP or HTTP server and email them tomultiple recipients. I/O connectorblocks on the rear of the camera canalso be used to trigger an event if anexternal security device, such as a doorsensor or alarm is activated. There's no denying that Axis networkcameras just keep getting better - andthe 221 is one of the best yet. It deliversexcellent image quality plus top framerates and works in any lighting condi-tion, making it ideally suited to a widerange of IP-based, surveillance applica-tions.
