Manual 2100-578EPage 16 of 41DUCT WORKAny heat pump is more critical of proper operatingcharge and an adequate duct system than a straight airconditioning unit. All duct work must be properly sizedfor the design airflow requirement of the equipment.Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) isan excellent guide to proper sizing. All duct work orportions thereof not in the conditioned space should beproperly insulated in order to both conserve energy andprevent condensation or moisture damage. When ductruns through unheated spaces, it should be insulatedwith a minimum of one inch of insulation. Useinsulation with a vapor barrier on the outside of theinsulation. Flexible joints should be used to connect theduct work to the equipment in order to keep the noisetransmission to a minimum. The I-TEC series heat pump has provision to attach asupply air duct to the top of the unit. Duct connectionsize is 20 inches x 24 inches. The flanges are shippedflat and must be bent upward using sheet metal flangingpliers. The duct work is field supplied. See Figure 6 forsuggested attachment method.Make sure to seal the slots in the bend-up flange at thetime of securing your ductwork to the flange. This canbe accomplished with either foil tape or caulk. Failingto do so may cause air leakage/whistling of air.NOTE: Unit cabinet, supply air duct and duct freeplenum are approved for “0” clearance tocombustible material. The I-TEC series heat pumps are designed for use withfree return (non-ducted) and either duct free with the useof IPBDFZ Series Plenum Box (18" or 12") or a ductsupply air system. The IPBDZ Plenum Box mounts on top of the unit andhas both vertically and horizontally adjustable louvers onthe front discharge grille. When used with a ducted supply, a Cabinet Extensionmay be used to conceal the ductwork above the unit tothe ceiling. The ICX28 extends 28" above the unit for atotal height of 10'-2" or can be trimmed to any height. The unit is equipped with a variable speed indoorblower motor which increases in speed with an increasein duct static pressure. The unit will therefore deliverproper rated airflow up to the maximum ESP shownin Table 1A. However, for quiet operation of theair system, the duct static should be kept as low aspractical, within the guidelines of good duct design.FIlTERSTwo 2-inch throw away filters (24 x 30) and two 1-inchthrow away filters (16 x 25) are supplied with eachunit. The 2-inch filters slide into brackets on both sidesfor the return air openings. If a CRV vent option isused, there are two (2) additional 1" throw away filtersincluded with that option. See Figure 7 for specificlocations. The filters are serviced from the inside ofthe building by opening the cabinet doors, and do notrequire any tools to access.MIS-2959SUPPLY DUCT ANDFASTENERS TO BEFIELD SUPPLIED24" 20"BEND THE PROVIDEDSUPPLY FRAME FLANGESUP FOR DUCT INSTALLATIONMIS-3202COMPRESSORACCESSACCESS TOWASHABLEFILTERSINDOORBLOWERACCESS24" X 30" 2"FILTERSFIGURE 6SUPPlY DUCT CONNECTIONSFIGURE 7FIlTER lOCATIONVENT & FlOORMOUNTING HOlEACCESS DOOR
