Operation and Maintenance ManualLast Updated - 08/31/2016495B ML TM (S)42HYDRAULIC RESERVOIR MAINTENANCEThe supply source for the hydraulic system, the oilreservoir, is located behind the cab. A sight gauge forchecking oil level is located on the reservoir next to theback of the cab (see Figure 1).Check oil level in reservoir before each period ofoperation, or daily. If, at any time, you find the level islow, check the loader for leaks around tubes, hoses, fittings, and couplings. DO NOT RUN MACHINE WITHLOW HYDRAULIC OIL!When maintaining the hydraulic system, keep all partsclean and remove all dirt from the area before you begindisassembly. Use caps and plugs to keep dirt out oftubelines and openings.ACCESSCOVERRETURNFILTERSDRAIN PLUG(on bottom of reservoir)HYDRAULIC OIL CHANGING PROCE-DUREThis procedure should be used once during the breakingin period of a new loader (after one week, or 50 hours ofoperation) and then every six months, or 1000 hours.Throughout the oil changing procedure remember thatcleanliness is absolutely necessary. Hands, tools, funnels, oil filling equipment, the oil filler opening, and, above all, the hydraulic oil itself must be kept absolutelyclean. Dirt in the hydraulic system can cause seriousdamage to pumps, valves, and cylinders.DRAINING THE RESERVOIR1. First, be sure boom is lowered to the ground andsecure.2. Remove the reservoir drain plug to drain the oil.CLEANING THE RESERVOIR1. Clean the area around the access cover and thenremove the cover.2. Remove all dirt and sediment from inside thereservoir and from filler strainer3. After everything in and around the reservoir iscompletely clean, replace the drain plug and accesscover.FILLING THE RESERVOIR1. With the drain plug in place and tightened, refill thetank with the recommended oil using the hand pumpattatched to the hydraulic system.2. With all the control valves in neutral, start theengine, running it slowly until the new oil circulatesthroughout the system and the pump quiets down.3. Add more oil until proper level is shown on sightgauge. This will work the air out of the system and preventcavitation, which is caused by air bubblesin the oil as it passes through a pump.4. Check the oil level again after the loader has beenoperating for an hour or two. Add oil as needed.Figure 1SIGHT GAUGE
