Chapter 2: Network Requirements and Installation2-2FOMIM User’s GuidePropagation delay is the amount of time it takes a packet to travel fromthe sending device to the receiving device. Total propagation delayallowed for the entire network is 25.6 μs. If the total propagation delaybetween any two nodes on the network exceeds 25.6 μs, then bridgesshould be used.• When using single mode fiber optic cable, segment lengths up to 5 kmare possible if system budgets are met.2.2 UNPACKING THE FOMIMUnpack the module as follows:1. Remove the shipping material covering the FOMIM in the shippingbox.2. Verify the contents of the shipping box. The box, as packed shouldcontain one FOMIM, one grounding strap, and one user’s guide.3. Carefully remove the FOMIM from the shipping box. Leave themodule in its conductive bag until you are ready to install it. Save theshipping box and materials in the event the unit has to be reshipped.4. Visually inspect the module within the nonconductive bag. If you seeany damage, contact Cabletron Systems Technical Supportimmediately.!CAUT IONThe module is very sensitive to static discharge. Observe allelectrostatic precautions while handling the FOMIM.
