ESXMIM/ESXMIM-F2 Installation GuideD-1APPENDIX DETHERNET CABLING REQUIREMENTSThis chapter contains general networking guidelines. Before attemptingto install the ESXMIM or any additional EPIMs or BRIMs, review therequirements and specifications outlined in this chapter.D.1 NETWORK REQUIREMENTSTake care in planning and preparing the cabling and connections for yournetwork. The quality of the connections, the length of cables, and otherconditions of the installation play critical roles in determining thereliability of your network.Refer to the sections which follow that apply to your specific networkconfiguration.D.1.1 10BASE-T Twisted Pair NetworkWhen connecting a 10BASE-T segment to any of the 10BASE-T hubinterfaces (ESXMIM Interfaces 1 - 5 or a Twisted Pair Ethernet PortInterface Module [EPIM-T]), ensure the network meets the followingrequirements:• Length: The IEEE 802.3 10BASE-T standard requires that10BASE-T devices transmit over a 100 meter (328 foot) link using22-24 AWG unshielded twisted pair wire. However, cable qualitylargely determines maximum link length. If you use high quality, lowattenuation cable, you can achieve link lengths of up to 200 meters.Cable delay limits the maximum link length to 200 meters.NOTEYour network installation must meet the conditions, guidelines, specifications, and requirements included in this chapter toensure satisfactory performance of this equipment. Failure tofollow these guidelines may result in poor networkperformance.
