PRODUCT OVERVIEWThis chapter provides the following information:• Product Description• Features• Front and Rear Panel Component Descriptions• Feature Summaries• Application ExampleDescriptionThis installation guide describes Cabletron Systems’ SmartSTACKELS100-S24TX2M Fast Ethernet switch. The switch provides 2410Base-T/100Base-TX ports, plus two slots for optional slide-in100Base-FX, 1000Base-SX or 1000Base-LX modules. One of these slotscan also be used for an optional Stacking Module that allows you to attachup to four switches to a 4 Gbps high-speed backplane. There is also anoptional SNMP-based Management Module that can be installed in therear panel. This module supports both in-band and out-of-band access formanaging the switch and the attached stack. The switch employs a high-speed switching fabric. This design allows forsimultaneous transport of multiple packets at low latency on all ports. Italso uses store-and-forward switching to ensure maximum data integrity. In this mode, the entire packet must be received into a port buffer andchecked for validity before being forwarded. This prevents errors frombeing propagated throughout the network. This switch also features full-duplex capability on all ports, which effectively doubles the bandwidth ofeach connection. The switch can be used in a standalone configuration, or can be stackedup to four high to form a single logical switch with up to 100 ports. Whenstacked, the 4 Gbps stack backplane provides enough bandwidth for themost demanding environment. Moreover, you can use a 100 Mbps fibermodule for connecting to a remote site, or a Gigabit module for a high-speed backbone connection. The RMON/SNMP/Web Management Module provides a broad range ofmanagement options. It includes a standards-compliant Simple NetworkManagement Protocol (SNMP) agent. The SNMP agent allows networkmanagement station applications to collect and present status andperformance information about the stack, as well as providing the abilityA switch stack, or a switch in a standalone configuration, musthave an optional Management Module installed to enable allports. The base unit alone has all ports disabled by default.
