75Shooting – Advanced FunctionsProgram AEUse the program AE mode to have thecamera automatically set the shutter speedand aperture value to match the brightness ofthe scene.z The shutter speed and aperture value willshow in red on the LCD monitor when thecorrect exposure cannot be obtained. Use thefollowing methods to obtain the correctexposure and make them appear in white.• Use the flash• Change the ISO speed• Change the light metering modeDifferences between the and Modes.z The following settings can be adjusted inmode, but not in mode.z For the correlation between aperture valueand shutter speed, see page 76.• Exposure Compensation • White Balance• ISO Speed • Flash (Flash on)• Photo Effects • Continuous Shooting• Light Metering Mode • Manual Focus• AutofocusSetting the Shutter SpeedWhen you set the shutter speed in the shutterspeed-priority AE mode, the cameraautomatically selects an aperture value tomatch the brightness.Faster shutter speeds allow you to catch aninstantaneous image of a moving subjectwhile slower speeds create a flowing effectand allow you to shoot without a flash in darkareas.z If the aperture value shows in red, theimage is underexposed (insufficient light)or overexposed (too much light). Adjustthe shutter speed using or until theaperture value display turns to white.z The nature of CCD image sensors is suchthat noise in the recorded imageincreases at slow shutter speeds. Thiscamera, however, applies specialprocessing to images shot at shutterspeeds slower than 1.3 seconds toeliminate the noise, thereby producinghigh-quality images. Nevertheless, acertain amount of processing time may berequired before the next image can beshot.
