3S Thermostat “jiggling” causes rapid--cycling, which is potentiallydamaging to the compressor. Do not move the temperatureselector on the thermostat for any reason for at least 5 minutesafter the compressor has shut off.S You may find that you can maintain greater personal comfort byrunning the fan continuously. “Air pockets” can form due to thestructure of the building, placement of registers, et cetera. Theseair pockets may be too cool or warm for your liking. Continuousfan operation minimizes any temperature differences. Also, systems equipped with electronic air cleaners and/or humidifiersoffer the added benefits of having the air continuously cleanedyear--round, and humidified during the winter season.S Your air conditioner will remove humidity from your homeduring the cooling season. After a few minutes of operation, youshould be able to see water trickle from the condensate drain ofthe cooling coil. Check this occasionally to be sure the drainsystem is not clogged. Of course, don’t expect to see muchdrainage if you live in a very dry environment.OPERATING YOUR AIR CONDITIONERThe operation of your air conditioning system is controlled by theindoor thermostat. You simply adjust the thermostat and itmaintains the indoor temperature at the level you select. Mostthermostats for air conditioning systems have three controls. Theseare the temperature control selector, FAN switch, and SYSTEMswitch. The temperature control selector is a dial or button(s) that allowsyou to establish the degree of temperature that you wish tomaintain for your personal comfort. Some thermostats possess twotemperature control selectors: one for setting the temperaturedesired during the cooling cycle, and one to set the heatingoperation temperature. Typical settings are 78_F (25.5_C) forcooling and 68_F (20_C) for heating. The FAN switch offers two options for controlling the blower:AUTO and ON. When set to AUTO, the blower will run during thetime the air conditioner is operating. When the FAN switch is set atthe ON position, the blower will run continuously.Typically, the SYSTEM switch on your thermostat offers thefollowing selections: COOL, OFF, and HEAT. Your thermostatmay also have a fourth selection, AUTO. The air conditioner willnot operate when the SYSTEM switch is set at the OFF position. With the SYSTEM switch set at COOL, the cooling section ofyour comfort system will operate when the indoor temperaturerises above the level that you wish to maintain. With the SYSTEMswitch set at the HEAT position, the heating system (if equipped)will operate automatically whenever the indoor temperature fallsbelow the level that you have selected. The AUTO selection found on some thermostats provides forautomatic changeover between cooling and heating cycles. Withthe SYSTEM switch set in the AUTO position, the cooling modeis activated when the indoor temperature rises above the thermostatcooling temperature setting, or the heating mode will be activatedwhen the indoor temperature drops below the thermostat setting forthe heating cycle.Cooling CycleWhen operating in the cooling cycle, your air conditioner will rununtil the indoor temperature is lowered to the level you haveselected. On extremely hot days, your air conditioner will run forlonger periods at a time and have shorter “off” periods than onmoderate days. The following are typical conditions that add extraheat and/or humidity to your home. Your air conditioner will worklonger to keep your home comfortable under these conditions:S Entrance doors are frequently opened and closedS Laundry appliances are being operatedS A shower is runningS More than the usual number of people are present in the homeS More than the normal number of electric lights are in useS Drapes are open on the sunny side of the homeHeating CycleIf you own a packaged air conditioner that includes an externalsupplemental heating source, you need to set your thermostat forheating when it is desired. With the SYSTEM switch of your indoor thermostat set to theHEAT position, the heating section of your home comfort systemwill operate until room temperature is raised to the level you haveselected. Of course, the heating unit will have to operate for longerperiods to maintain a comfortable environment on colder days andnights than on moderate ones.®A94134PERFORMING ROUTINE MAINTENANCEFIRE, EXPLOSION, ELECTRICAL SHOCK ANDCUT HAZARDFailure to follow this warning could result in personalinjury, death or property damage.1.
