Step 5—Filter ArrangementNever operate unit without a filter or with blower accesspanel removed. Failure to follow this caution will result inminor unit operation or performance satisfaction.Factory-supplied washable framed filters are shipped in blowercompartment. Determine location for filter and relocate filterretaining wire if necessary. See Table 2 to determine correct filtersize for desired filter location. Table 2 indicates filter size, location, and quantity shipped with this furnace. See Fig. 2 forlocation and size of bottom and side return-air openings.Use care when cutting support rods in filters to protect againstflying pieces and sharp rod ends. Wear safety glasses, gloves, and appropriate protective clothing. Failure to follow thiscaution could result in minor personal injury. For airflow requirements above 1800 CFM, see Air Deliverytable in Product Data literature for specific use of single sideinlets. The use of both side inlets, a combination of 1 side andthe bottom, or the bottom only will ensure adequate return airopenings for airflow requirements above 1800 CFM. Failureto follow this caution will result in minor unit operation orperformance satisfaction.NOTE: Side return-air openings can ONLY be used in UPFLOWconfigurations. Install filter(s) as shown in Fig. 25.Bottom return-air opening may be used with all 4 orientations.Filter may need to be cut to fit some furnace widths. Install filteras shown in Fig. 26.Step 6—Bottom Closure PanelThese furnaces are shipped with bottom enclosure panel installedin bottom return-air opening. This panel MUST be in place whenside return air is used.To remove bottom closure panel, perform following:1. Tilt or raise furnace and remove 2 screws holding front fillerpanel. (See Fig. 27.)2. Rotate front filler panel downward to release holding tabs.3. Remove bottom closure panel.4. Reinstall front filler panel and screws.Step 7—Gas PipingGas piping must be installed in accordance with national and localcodes. Refer to current edition of NFGC in the United States.Canadian installations must be made in accordance with NSCNG-PIC and all authorities having jurisdiction. Gas supply line shouldbe a separate line running directly from meter to furnace, ifpossible. Refer to Table 3 for recommended gas pipe sizing. Risersmust be used to connect to furnace and to meter. Support all gaspiping with appropriate straps, hangers, etc. Use a minimum of 1hanger every 6 ft. Joint compound (pipe dope) should be appliedsparingly and only to male threads of joints. Pipe dope must beresistant to propane gas.Connect gas pipe to furnace using a backup wrench to avoiddamaging gas controls. Failure to follow this caution willresult in minor unit operation or performance satisfaction.Gas valve ON and OFF switch MUST be facing forward ortilted upward. (See Fig. 46.) Failure to follow this warningcould result in property damage or death.Never purge a gas line into a combustion chamber. Use acommercially available soap solution made specifically forthe detection of leaks to check all connections. A failure tofollow this warning could result in fire, explosion, personalinjury, or death.Use proper length of pipe to avoid stress on gas controlmanifold. Failure to follow this warning could result in a gasleak resulting in fire, explosion, personal injury, or death.Install a sediment trap in riser leading to furnace. Trap can beinstalled by connecting a tee to riser leading to furnace sostraight-through section of tee is vertical. Then connect a cappednipple into lower end of tee. Capped nipple should extend belowlevel of gas controls. Place a ground joint union between gascontrol manifold and manual gas shutoff valve.
