32 Information servicing1.Checks to the areaPrior to beginning work on systems containingflammable refrigerants, safety checks arenecessary to ensure that the risk of ignition isminimised. For repair to the refrigeratingsystem, the following precautions shall be compliedwith prior to conducting work on thesystem.2. Work procedureWork shall be undertaken under a controlledprocedure so as to minimise the risk of aflammable gas or vapour being present while thework is being performed.3. General work areaAll maintenance staff and others working in thelocal area shall be instructed on the natureof work being carried out. Work in confined spacesshall be avoided. The area around thework space shall be sectioned off. Ensure that theconditions within the area have beenmade safe by control of flammable material.4. Checking for presence of refrigerantThe area shall be checked with an appropriaterefrigerant detector prior to and during work,to ensure the technician is aware of potentiallyflammable atmospheres. Ensure that theleak detection equipment being used is suitable foruse with flammable refrigerants, i.e. nosparking, adequately sealed or intrinsically safe.5. Presence of fire extinguisherIf any hot work is to be conducted on therefrigeration equipment or any associated parts, appropriate fire extinguishing equipment shall beavailable to hand. Have a dry powder orCO2 fire extinguisher adjacent to the charging area.6. No ignition sourcesNo person carrying out work in relation to arefrigeration system which involves exposingany pipe work that contains or has containedflammable refrigerant shall use any sources ofignition in such a manner that it may lead to the riskof fire or explosion. All possible ignitionsources, including cigarette smoking, should bekept sufficiently far away from the site ofinstallation, repairing, removing and disposal, during which flammable refrigerant canpossibly be released to the surrounding space.Prior to work taking place, the area aroundthe equipment is to be surveyed to make sure thatthere are no flammable hazards or ignitionrisks.NO SMOKING signs shall be displayed.7. Ventilated areaEnsure that the area is in the open or that it isadequately ventilated before breaking into thesystem or conducting any hot work. A degree ofventilation shall continue during the periodthat the work is carried out. The ventilation shouldsafely disperse any released refrigerantand preferably expel it externally into theatmosphere.8. Checks to the refrigeration equipmentWhere electrical components are being changed, they shall be fit for the purpose and to the correctspecification. At all times the manufacturer'smaintenance and service guidelines shall befollowed. If in doubt consult the manufacturer'stechnical department for assistance. The followingchecks shall be applied to installations usingflammable refrigerants:the charge size is in accordance with the roomsize within which the refrigerant containing partsare installed;the ventilation machinery and outlets areoperating adequately and are not obstructed;if an indirect refrigerating circuit is being used, the secondary circuit shall be checkedfor the presence of refrigerant; marking to theequipment continues to be visible and legible.markings and signs that are illegible shall becorrected;refrigeration pipe or components are installed ina position where they are unlikely to be exposed toany substance which may corrode refrigerantcontaining components, unless the components areconstructed of materials which are inherentlyresistant to beingcorroded or are suitably protected against being socorroded.9. Checks to electrical devicesRepair and maintenance to electrical componentsshall include initial safety checks and componentinspection procedures. If a fault exists that couldcompromise safety, then noelectrical supply shall be connected to the circuituntil it is satisfactorily dealt with. If the fault cannotbe corrected immediately but it is necessary tocontinue operation, an adequatetemporary solution shall be used. This shall bereported to the owner of the equipment so allparties are advised. Initial safety checks shallinclude:that capacitors are discharged: this shall bedone in a safe manner to avoid possibility ofsparking;that there no live electrical components andwiring are exposed while charging, recovering orpurging the system;that there is continuity of earth bonding.
