Power Train Testing And AdjustingWear eye protection when seating, polishing orcleaning the motor with air pressure. During theseating and polishing procedure, keep fingersaway from components in rotation. For preventionof injury to fingers, do not use a commutatorcleaner or brush seater stone that is shorter than63.5 mm (2.50 in.).Brush Seating(3) ZLX –0036 Brush seater stone.9. Put ZLX–0036 Brush Seater Stone (3) on thecommutator and operate the motor at a slowspeed.NOTICEDo not let stone (3) stay in contact with the commutatorbar too long. This causes more wear than is necessaryto the brushes and the commutator.10. Move stone (3) across the commutator at thebacke edge of the brushes for a short time. Thiswill take the shiny finish off the commutator andseat the new brushes.11. Turn the key switch to the OFF position anddisconnect the batteries. Check the contactsurface of each brush. At least 85% of the brushcontact surface of each brush must show wear. Ifnecessary, do Steps 8 through 11 again until thecorrect wear can be seen on the brush contactsurface.NOTICENever use air pressure that is more than 205 kPa (30psi). Make sure the line is equipped with a water filter.12. After the brushes have the correct seat contactsurface, operate the motor at slow speed. Usecompressed (pressure) air to remove all dust andabrasive grit.Armature TestsTest For Short CircuitShort Circuit Test(1) Growler. (2) Armature. (3) Hacksaw blade.(4) Green light. (5) Red light.1. Put armature windings (2) in the jaws of growler.(3).2. Turn the growler (1) on. Slowly turn the growler onthe armature (2) while a hacksaw blade (3) is heldover the windings.3. If the windings are shorted, the green light (4) willbe on. The red light (5) will be on if the windingsdo not have a short. The odor of burned insulation from the drive motorwhile it is in operation is an indication of a short inthe armature.Tools NeededDigital Multimeter Or Equivalent 1Growler Tester 1WARNING15353241
