4 FRCC.PC.007.B8.02Application guidelinesIn a Danfoss SH scroll compressor, thecompression is performed by two scroll elementslocated in the upper part of the compressor.Suction gas enters the compressor at the suctionconnection. As all of the gas flows around andthrough the electrical motor, thus ensuringcomplete motor cooling in all applications, oildroplets separate and fall into the oil sump. After exiting the electrical motor, the gas entersthe scroll elements where compression takesplace. Ultimately, the discharge gas leaves thecompressor at the discharge connection. The fi gure below illustrates the entirecompression process. The centre of the orbitingscroll (in grey) traces a circular path aroundthe centre of the fixed scroll (in black). Thismovement creates symmetrical compressionpockets between the two scroll elements.Low-pressure suction gas is trapped withineach crescent-shaped pocket as it gets formed;continuous motion of the orbiting scroll servesto seal the pocket, which decreases in volumeas the pocket moves towards the centre of thescroll set increasing the gas pressure. Maximumcompression is achieved once a pocket reachesthe centre where the discharge port is located;this stage occurs after three complete orbits.Compression is a continuous process: thescroll movement is suction, compression anddischarge all at the same time.Scroll compression principleSUCTIONCOMPRESSIONDISCHARGE
