ince its inception, DefinitiveTechnology has specialized inbipolar loudspeaker designs.Bipolar speakers typically have duplicategroups of drivers, facing to the front andrear and driven in phase. That configura-tion gives nearly omnidirectionalresponse in the horizontal plane, with justa slight reduction in output to the sides atmiddle and high frequencies.Bipolar speakers, when placed a fewfeet from the wall behind them, tend toadd a quality of spaciousness to thesound, creating a somewhat more realis-tic soundstage than conventional speakerdesigns. In addition, the multiple driverscan handle more power than a standardconfiguration for a given distortion level(or, conversely, will generate less distor-tion for a given sound pressure level).Another potential benefit of the bipolarconfiguration is a narrower cabinet width, since low frequencies can be handled veryeffectively by two modestly sized woofersinstead of a single larger one. That enablesthe designer to use a smaller panel widthfor a given level of bass performance, minimizing the enclosure “footprint.”But in the case of DefinitiveTechnology’s latest bipolar speaker, theBP 2000, the most distinctive (albeit virtu-ally invisible) feature is a built-in poweredsubwoofer. The result is a reasonablycompact speaker system with truly prodi-gious bass extension and output capability.Stereo ReviewSPECIAL TEST REPORTJulian Hirsch, Hirsch-Houck LaboratoriesS That is not to say that the BP 2000 isexactly a small speaker—each one mea-sures 50 inches high, 9 inches wide, and16 7/8 inches deep andweighs an impressive120 pounds—yet it canbe used effectively inalmost any size roomwithout visually domi-nating the decor.Styled like most pre-vious DefinitiveTechnology bipolarspeakers, the BP 2000is a slender column cov-ered with a black elastic“sock” over its fullheight on the front, sides, and about two-thirds of the rear panel. The top is a piano-fin-ish, black-lacqueredwooden plate that iseasily removed forpulling down the clothsock and exposing thedrivers. The speaker’sbase is a similarly fin-ished wooden plate. The system is alsoavailable with cherryendcaps. For a tightercontact with the floor, optional spikes areavailable.Although the BP 2000 is relatively talland deep, side placement of the subwooferdriver enables the cabinet to remain asnarrow as those of most other DefinitiveTechnology speakers, and it occu-pies only about a square foot offloor space.
