One pair faces for-ward conventionally, while the otherfaces the rear, so that its direct outputis reflected from the wall behind thespeaker enclosure. The two sets ofdrivers, which share a common enclo-sure volume and port, operate inphase (with their cones movinginward or outward simultaneously),so that their low-bass outputs tend toreinforce each other instead of cancel-ing as happens with dipole (out-of-phase) radiators. Each driver group consists of a sin-gle 5 1/2-inch polypropylene-conewoofer and a 3/4-inch soft-dometweeter with magnetic-fluid coolingand damping. The crossover, at anunspecified frequency, is of theLinkwitz-Riley type to optimize thephase and frequency response throughthe crossover region. The enclosurewas designed with a newly developedcomputer program and is said to rivalthe bass-loading characteristics of atransmission-line enclosure with asimpler and less expensive cabinet.Another goal of the BP8’s designerswas to minimize diffraction, com-monly caused by grille frames andexternal cabinet discontinuities, which can alter a speaker’s imagingcharacteristics. The BP8 is a colum-nar design with rounded edges, justwide enough to accommodate thebase drivers. Instead of having a con-ventional grille, the entire cabinet(except for its top and bottom) isenclosed in a black (or, optionally, white) fabric “sock” that fits snuglyaround its full length and can berolled down for access to the drivers. The top plate and the visible edges ofthe base are finished in either glossyblack or genuine oak.
