DCSE: PowerEdge 1550 Self-Study Version 0.3, 4 December, 2000Page 36 DellSafety ConsiderationsBefore performing any installation or break/fix procedures involvingdisassembly/re-assembly, all safety precautions should be observed.• Turn off the server and any attached peripherals.• Disconnect the server and any attached peripherals from AC powersources.• Disconnect any telephone or telecommunications lines from the server. Many of the server’s internal components are subject to ESD damage. Dellrecommends that you use a wrist grounding strap and mat when workinginside any computer system.Flea PowerMany Dell products should be completely unplugged before opening thecase because of “Flea Power.” Systems that incorporate Flea Power areessentially powered, even when apparently turned off. The internal powerallows the systems to be remotely turned on (wake on LAN), suspendedinto a “sleep” mode, and have other advanced power managementfeatures.Techniques similar to a Flea Power are commonly used in modern remote-controlled electronic devices (televisions, VCRs, etc.).After unplugging the system, allow the charge to drain from the circuits bywaiting approximately 30 to 45 seconds before removing components. All of the Dell PowerEdge midnight gray (x5x0 series) srvers incorporateFlea Power.ESDElectrostatic discharge (ESD) is a major concern when handlingcomponents, especially expansion cards and the system board. Very slightcharges can damage circuits in ways that may not be obvious. Intermittentproblems or a shortened product lifespan can also result.Static electricity can harm delicate components inside your computer. Toprevent static damage, use a wrist grounding strap. If a strap is notavailable, then discharge static electricity from your body before youtouch any of your computer’s electronic components, such as themicroprocessor. You can do so by touching an unpainted metal surface onthe computer chassis. As you continue to work inside the computer, periodically touch anunpainted metal surface to remove any static charge your body may haveaccumulated. In addition to the preceding precautions, you can also takethe following steps to prevent damage from electrostatic discharge:
