1-2 Microprocessor Board Upgrade GuideTo update the system BIOS from the flash BIOS diskette, boot the system from thediskette and follow the on-screen instructions.Required ToolsThe upgrade procedure requires the use of the following tools:• 1/4-inch nut driver, preferably with magnetic insert• Wrist grounding strap for electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection• Antistatic mat• Key to the system keylock• #2 Phillips screwdriverPrecautionary MeasuresBefore you remove the computer covers, perform the following steps in the sequenceindicated.CAUTION: Do not attempt to service the computer system yourself, exceptas explained in this guide and elsewhere in Dell documentation. Alwaysfollow installation and service instructions closely.CAUTION: To help avoid possible damage to the system board, wait5 seconds after turning off the system before removing a component fromthe system board or disconnecting a peripheral device from the computer.1. Touch an unpainted metal surface on the chassis, such as the metal around thecard-slot openings at the back of the computer, before touching anything insideyour computer.While you work, periodically touch an unpainted metal surface on the computerchassis to dissipate any static electricity that might harm internal components.2. Turn off your computer and any peripherals.3. Disconnect your computer and peripherals from their power sources. Also, dis-connect any telephone or telecommunication lines from the computer. Doing soreduces the potential for personal injury or shock.In addition, take note of these safety guidelines when appropriate:• When you disconnect a cable, pull on its connector or on its strain-relief loop, noton the cable itself. Some cables have a connector with locking tabs; if you are dis-connecting this type of cable, press in on the locking tabs before disconnectingthe cable. As you pull connectors apart, keep them evenly aligned to avoid bend-ing any connector pins. Also, before you connect a cable, make sure bothconnectors are correctly oriented and aligned.
