1-8 Dell PowerVault Storage Systems — Rack Installation Guide• If you are installing an SPS along with a DPE, install the SPS directly below theDPE to which it will be connected.• For Fibre Channel interfaces, an SPS must be installed directly below the DPE,DAE, or intelligent DAE (iDAE) to which it will be connected.• If you are installing one or more DAEs along with a DPE, consider the length ofthe particular cables purchased with your storage systems. In many installations, you will need to install the DPE directly below the lowest DAE. An optional 10-meter (m) cable, when available, allows you to connect a DPE in one rack withDAEs in a second rack.• If there are no other rack-mountable components installed in the rack, Dell sug-gests that you install the first SPS tray at the bottom U-aligned position in therack cabinet. This minimizes alignment and speed installation.NOTICE: In a rack mount system, the SPS unit(s) must be placed directlybeneath the enclosure to which it will be connected. It is assumed that theSPS tray is mounted directly beneath the DPE.Installing a 900-W SPS in the RackTo install a 900-W SPS in the rack, perform the following major steps. Each major stephas its own procedure in the subsections that follow.1. Mark the location for the tray.2. Install the tray hardware.3. Install a single SPS unit in the tray.4. Install two SPS units in the tray.NOTE: If you purchased a Dell rack along with your 900-W SPS and PowerVault stor-age system(s), the SPS tray is preinstalled in the rack. Skip to “Installing a Single900-W SPS Unit in the Tray” or “Installing Two 900-W SPS Units in the Tray” asappropriate.Marking the Location for the 900-W SPS Tray1. Determine where you want to install the SPS tray.2. After determining where to install the SPS tray, mark the lower edge of the SPStray on the rack’s front and back vertical rails with a felt-tipped marker or maskingtape (see Figure 1-6 and Figure 1-9).3. After marking the lower edge of the SPS tray, place an additional mark on eachfront vertical rail 7/8 inch (22 mm) above the lower edge of the tray to indicatewhere the two cage-nuts for the tray will be installed (see Figure 1-6).
