Information UpdateThis document provides updated information regarding the Dell™ PowerVault™ MD1000Storage Enclosure.Loss of Communication Between the Dell PERC 5/E Adapterand the Dell PowerVault MD1000 Storage EnclosureThe following activities may cause loss of communication to occur:• Installing or replacing an enclosure management module (EMM) while the server is online• Downloading PowerVault MD1000 firmware• Accidentally disconnecting the cables to the enclosure or EMM while the server is online• Powering down the PowerVault MD 1000 enclosure while the server is onlineNOTE: In a split-mode configuration, these conditions apply to the server that is directly attached to theaffected EMM. In a daisy-chain configuration, these conditions apply when communication is lost to anyenclosure in the daisy chain.Loss of Communication MessagesWhen a loss of communication scenario occurs, the following messages could be reported by thePERC 5/E Adapter Ctrl-R utility and the Dell OpenManage™ applications. These messages arelogged as a result of a loss of communication and they do not indicate actual hardwarecomponent failures.• The PERC 5/E Adapter Ctrl-R utility may report:– Physical disks and virtual disks as Offline, Degraded, Failed, or Foreign• The Dell OpenManage Server Administrator Storage Management may report:– Lost Communication alert(s) to the Dell OpenManage Server Administrator Alert Log– The enclosure, physical disks, and virtual disks as Offline, Degraded, Failed, or ForeignResolving a Loss of Communication ScenarioPerform the following steps when a loss of communication scenario occurs:1 Power down the server.2 Verify that all the cables are properly connected and secured to the Dell PERC 5/E Adapterand the Dell PowerVault MD1000 enclosures.April 2006
