Installing System Components 67General Memory Module Installation GuidelinesTo ensure optimal performance of your system, observe the following generalguidelines when configuring your system memory.NOTE: Memory configurations that fail to observe these guidelines can preventyour system from starting and producing any video output.• Except for memory channels that are unused, all populated memorychannels must have identical configurations.• Memory modules are installed in the numeric order of the socketsbeginning with 1 to 6.Replacing Memory ModulesWARNING: The memory modules are hot to touch for some time after the systemhas been powered down. Allow time for the memory modules to cool beforehandling them. Handle the memory modules by the card edges and avoid touchingthe components on the memory module.CAUTION: Many repairs may only be done by a certified service technician.You should only perform troubleshooting and simple repairs as authorized inyour product documentation, or as directed by the online or telephone serviceand support team. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is notcovered by your warranty. Read and follow the safety instructions that camewith the product.1 Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals, and disconnect thesystem from the electrical outlet.2 Open the system. See "Opening the System" on page 52.3 Remove the cooling shroud. See "Removing the Cooling Shroud" on page 62.4 Locate the memory module sockets. See Figure 5-1.5 Press down and out on the ejectors on each end of the socket until the memorymodule pops out of the socket. See Figure 2-10.Handle each memory module only on either card edge, making sure not totouch the middle of the memory module.
