GETTING STARTEDBefore you start, please check that your iPod /iPhone is up to date. You can get the latestfirmware updates via iTunes.3. OPERATIONSwitch your car radio ON and select CD changeras source. If in doubt consult the audio section ofyour car’s instruction manual.Depending on your Radio, the music menu canbe browsed with Radio buttons (Next / Back),MMI or i-Drive controller (for further detailsplease go to Section 6).Connect your iPod to the Gateway. It will startplaying the first song on the device. In case theGateway has been in use earlier, music willcontinue from the last played point.Switching off the car or the radio will stopplayback and put the source devices to stand-by(except which is connected into AUX).Next / Back and Random / Repeat / Scan buttons(radio dependent) work as expected.If no device is connected then AUX GW isdisplayed and the time counter is just countingup.4. ABOUT SOURCESYou can select the music source for playback inthe Source Menu. This can be:• GW AUX: in AUX mode the radio displays‘AUX GW’ on the radio screen and clusterdisplay (Car / Radio dependent). No controlfunction is available• iPod UI: the original user interface of theiPod remains active (i.e. the click wheelstill works) so you can use it for browsing asnormal. In this mode the id3 tag info will notbe displayed, time counter is notsynchronized and only ‘iPod UI’ will appearon the screen• iPod GW: the click wheel or the touchscreen (iPhone, iPod touch) is disabled,iPod displays the currently played songinformation, except on touch and iPhonewhere ‘Accessory attached’ message isdisplayed. The iPod playback control ispossible from the car stereo (Head Unit) orthe steering wheel only. In this mode theid3 tag info and the time is displayed on theradio display (Radio dependent)• USB: the playback is controlled from theGateway. ID3 tag info will be displayed (ifthat details are properly filled out)Please note: Gateway returns to playbackscreen after 15 - 30 seconds (radio dependent)of inactivity in any other browsing mode.5. ABOUT GATEWAY MENUBrowsing and Selecting Music (iPod or USB)You can use the other menu items to browse thecontent of the iPod or USB device• Files, Artists, Albums, Titles, Bookmarks(for USB only): Provides browsing andselecting the music files on your USBdevice• Music (for iPod only): Allows browsing andselecting music in the sub-menus: Playlist,Artists, Albums, Songs, Genres,Composers, Audiobooks and PodcastsWhen an artist is selected the PLAY menu item,play all the songs from the given artist. Selectingthe ALL menu option will lists all the songs fromthe given artists. The albums from the artist arelisted as separate items afterwards.When an album is selected, all the songs fromthe given album are listed as separate itemsafterwards.The following menu items available in the mainmenu serve as specific functions for musicplayback:• Play All: plays all the music from theselected source. The playback starts fromthe first song on the device• Album play: Plays the full album of thesong is being played, typically used inrandom play modePlease note: In case the current list of theplaylist/album contains more than 30 items(songs) the whole list cannot be displayed on thesame screen due to the technical limitation of theradio so it will be split to pages (sub lists)containing 30 items.Settings menuVolumeThe volume menu allows you to set the differentvolumes in the system:• iPod, AUX volumes for music playbackLanguageThe language menu allows you to change themenu language of the GatewayAboutProvides information on the gateway product(SW versions, serial number, etc.).6. SPECIFIC OPERATION GUIDESBMWThe menu of the Gateway 500S is displayed onthe iDrive or the radio screen.The music playback and settings are controlledfrom the radio or iDrive controller, but it is alsopossible to select the next or the previous trackfrom the steering wheel buttons (if available).You can enter the Gateway main menu byselecting disc 6 where you can toggles betweendifferent sources or browse and select differentmusic. For more information, please checksection #5.Browsing is possible on non-iDrive cars, by thenext or previous track buttons. In order to selecta menu item, press and hold the Fast Forwardbutton (about 3 seconds). Press and hold theFast Rewind if you want to get back to theprevious menu.On iDrive based system turn the iDrive controllerleft or right for browsing. Press the iDrive toselect a song or enter a menu, slide thecontroller UP and push the iDrive controller to getback to the previous menu. |
