Figure25 shows an incorrect pilot flame pattern. The incor-rect pilot flame is not touching the thermocouple. This will cause the thermocouple to cool. When thethermocouple cools, the heater will shut down.If pilot flame pattern is incorrect, as shown inFigure 25• turn heater off (see To Turn Off Gas to Ap-pliance), page 18• see Troubleshooting, page 21Note: The pilot flame on natural gas units willhave a slight curve, but flame should be blue andhave no yellow or orange color.BURNER pRIMARY AIR HOLESAir is drawn into the burner through the holes in thefitting at the entrance to the burner. These holes maybecome blocked with dust, lint or pet hair. Periodi-cally inspect these holes for any blockage and cleanas necessary. Blocked air holes will create soot.MAIN BURNERPeriodically inspect all burner flame holes with theheater running. All slotted burner flame holes shouldbe open with yellow flame present. All round burnerflame holes should be open with a small blue flamepresent. Some burner flame holes may becomeblocked by debris or rust, with no flame present. Ifso, turn off heater and let cool. Remove blockage.Blocked burner flame holes will create soot.Figure 24 - Correct Pilot Flame PatternFigure 25 - Incorrect Pilot Flame PatternThermocouplePilot BurnerThermocouplePilot BurnerCLEANING ANDMAINTENANCEWARNING: Turn off heaterand let cool before cleaning.CAUTION: You must keepcontrol areas, burner and circu-lating air passageways of heaterclean. Inspect these areas ofheater before each use. Haveheater inspected yearly by a quali-fied service person. Heater mayneed more frequent cleaning dueto excessive lint from carpeting, bedding material, pet hair, etc.WARNING: Failure to keepthe primary air opening(s) ofthe burner(s) clean may result insooting and property damage.BURNER INjECTOR HOLDER ANDpILOT AIR INLET HOLEThe primary air inlet holes allow the proper amountof air to mix with the gas. This provides a cleanburning flame. Keep these holes clear of dust, dirt, lint and pet hair. Clean these air inlet holes prior toeach heating season. Blocked air holes will createsoot. We recommend that you clean the unit everythree months during operation and have heaterinspected yearly by a qualified service person. We also recommend that you keep the burnertube and pilot assembly clean and free of dust anddirt. To clean these parts we recommend usingcompressed air no greater than 30 PSI. Your localcomputer store, hardware store or home centermay carry compressed air in a can. You can use avacuum cleaner in the blow position. If using com-pressed air in a can, please follow the directions onthe can. If you don’t follow directions on the can,you could damage the pilot assembly.
