Periodically inspect these holes for anyblockage and clean as necessary. Blocked airholes will create soot.MAIN BURNERPeriodically inspect all burner flame holes withthe heater running. All slotted burner flameholes should be open with yellow flame pres-ent. All round burner flame holes should beopen with a small blue flame present. Someburner flame holes may become blocked bydebris or rust, with no flame present. If so,turn off heater and let cool. Remove blockage, blocked burner flame holes will create soot.CLEANING AND MAINTENANCECheck pilot flame pattern and burner flamepatterns often.pILOT FLAME pATTERNFigure 21 shows a correct pilot flame pattern.Figure 22 shows an incorrect pilot flame pat-tern. The incorrect pilot flame is not touchingthe thermocouple. This will cause the thermo-couple to cool. When the thermocouple cools, the heater will shut down.If pilot flame pattern is incorrect, as shownin Figure 22• turn heater off (see To Turn Off Gas to Ap-pliance, page 17)• see Troubleshooting, page 20Note: The pilot flame on natural gas units willhave a slight curve, but flame should be blueand have no yellow or orange color.Pilot BurnerThermocouplePilot BurnerThermocoupleWARNING: Turn off heaterand let cool before cleaning.CAUTION: You must keepcontrol areas, burner and circu-lating air passageways of heaterclean. Inspect these areas ofheater before each use. Haveheater inspected yearly by aqualified service person. Heatermay need more frequent clean-ing due to excessive lint fromcarpeting, bedding material, pethair, etc.WARNING: Failure to keepthe primary air opening(s) ofthe burner(s) clean may result insooting and property damage.ODS/PILOT AND BURNERUse a vacuum cleaner or small, soft bristledbrush to clean.BURNER INjECTOR HOLDER ANDpILOT AIR INLET HOLEThe primary air inlet holes allow the properamount of air to mix with the gas. This pro-vides a clean burning flame. Keep these holesclear of dust, dirt and lint. Clean these air inletholes prior to each heating season. Blockedair holes will create soot. We recommend thatyou clean the unit every three months duringoperation and have heater inspected yearlyby a qualified service person.
