When the thermocouple cools, the heater will shut down.If pilot flame pattern is incorrect, as shown inFigure 40• turn heater off (see To Turn Off Gas to Appli-ance, page 21)• see Troubleshooting, page 25Note: The pilot flame on a natural gas units willhave a slight curve, but flame should be blue andhave no yellow or orange color.Figure 39 - Correct Pilot Flame PatternFigure 40 - Incorrect Pilot Flame PatternPilot Burner ThermocoupleThermocouplePilot BurnerThermocouplePilot BurnerThermocouplePilot BurnerNatural Gas PilotPropane/LP Gas PilotNatural Gas PilotPropane/LP Gas PilotBURNER PRIMARY AIR HOLESAir is drawn into the burner through the holes inthe fitting at the burner entrance. These holes maybecome blocked with dust or lint. Periodicallyinspect these holes for any blockage and clean ifneeded. Blocked air holes will create soot.MAIN BURNERPeriodically inspect all burner flame holes with thefireplace running. All slotted burner flame holesshould be open with yellow flame present. All roundburner flame holes should be open with a small blueflame present. Some burner flame holes may becomeblocked by debris or rust, with no flame present. Ifso, turn off fireplace and let cool. Remove blockage.Blocked burner flame holes will create soot.BURNER FLAME PATTERNWARNING: If yellow tippingoccurs, your fireplace couldproduce increased levels ofcarbon monoxide.NOTICE: Do not mistake orangeflames with yellow tipping. Dirtor other fine particles enter thefireplace and burn causing briefpatches of orange flame.Figure 41 shows a correct burner flame pattern. Fig-ure 42 shows an incorrect burner flame pattern. Theincorrect burner flame pattern shows the flame higherconsistently higher than 1 inch above the logs.If burner flame pattern is incorrect, as shown inFigure 42• turn heater off (see To Turn Off Gas To Appli-ance, page 21)• see Troubleshooting, page 25Figure 41 - Correct Burner Flame PatternYellow TippingFigure 42 - Incorrect Burner Flame Pattern
