Whenthe fireplace is in operation, doors must be fullyopened or fully closed position only or a fire hazardmay be created (see Figure 28).A fireplace equipped with glass doors operatesmush differently than a fireplace with an openfront. A fireplace with glass doors has a limitedamount of air for combustion.Excessive heat within the fireplace can result if toolarge a fire is built or if the combustion air gate isnot completely open. The following tips shouldbe followed to assure that both the fireplace andthe glass door retain their beauty and functionproperly. Both the flue damper and the glass doorsmust be fully opened before starting the fire. Thiswill provide sufficient combustion air and maintainsafe temperatures in the firebox.IMPORTANT: The glass must be allowed towarm slowly and evenly. The tempered glass willwithstand a gradual temperature rise to 550° F,which is more than a normal fire will generate.Such materials as pitch/wax laden logs, very drymill end lumber and large amounts of paper orcardboard boxes can create an excessively hot fireand should not be burned in this fireplace. Alwayskeep the fire well back from the doors and neverallow flames to contact the glass.WARNING: Fireplacesequipped with glass doorsshould be operated only withdoors fully opened or doors fullyclosed. Doors, if left partly open, may draw gas and flame out ofthe fireplace opening creatingrisks of both fire and smoke.Cleaning the GlassClean the glass with any commercial glass cleaneror soap and water. Do not use any abrasive mate-rial to clean the glass. Do not clean the glass withany cool water is the glass is still hot from thefire and smoke.A gas line or gas log lighter may be installed for thepurpose of installing a vented or vent-free deco-rative gas appliance incorporating an automaticshutoff device and complying with the Standardfor Decorative Gas Appliances for Installation inVented Fireplaces, ANSI Z21.60 or American GasAssociation draft requirements for Gas Fired LogLighters for Wood Burning Fireplaces, Draft NO.4 dated August, 1993.If you wish to install an unvented (vent-free) gaslog set, only unvented gas log sets which have beenfound to comply with the standard for unventedroom heaters, ANSI Z21.11.2 are to be installedin this fireplace.OUTSIDE AIR AND DAMPERHANDLE OPERATIONThe damper handle, which opens and closes thedamper blade, is located in the upper front face ofthe fireplace. Pushing the handle forward and upof the keyway slot will free the damper blade toautomatically open. Pushing the handle forwardand down will lock the damper blade closed (seeFigure 29, page 22).The outside air kit lever is located at the left andright hand sides of the fireplace (see Figure 30,page 22) Lifting the lever up will free the outsideair door to open. Pulling the lever down will lockthe door.
