Remove knockout indentation on refrac-tory or firebrick wall located above refrac-tory hearth floor. The knockout indentationmust be firmly tapped with any solid objectsuch as a 1/2" dowel until it is released.Remove fragmented portions of refractory(see Figure 18).2. Remove gas line cover plate located oneither side of fireplace and pull out insu-lation from gas line conduit sleeve. Saveinsulation for reuse. Replace screws.3. Run a 1/2" black iron gas line into fireplacethrough rear at gas line conduit sleeve(if using a raised platform, add height).Provide sufficient gas line into fireplacechamber for fitting connection (see Figure19).. Note: Secure incoming gas line to woodframing to provide rigidity for threaded end.4. Repack insulation around gas line and intosleeve opening. Seal any gaps betweengas line and refractory knockout hole withrefractory cement or commercial furnacecement, Install gas appliance or cap-offgas line if desired.CAUTION: All gas pipingand connections must be testedfor leaks after the installationis completed. After ensuringthat the gas valve is on, applysoap and water solution to allconnections and joints. Bubblesforming show a leak. Correctall leaks at once. DO NOT USEAN OPEN FLAME FOR LEAKTESTING AND DO NOT OPER-ATE ANY APPLIANCE IF A LEAKIS DETECTED. LEAK TESTINGSHOULD BE DONE BY A QUALI-FIED SERVICE PERSON.WARNING: Do not operate anunvented gas log set in this fire-place with the chimney removed.If you install a decorative gas appliance(vented gas log), the decorative gas appliancemust comply with the Standard for DecorativeGas Appliance for Installation in Solid FuelBurning Fireplaces, ANS Z21.60, Z21.84 orRG 2-72 and shall also be installed in accor-dance with the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI7223NFPA 54 latest edition.WARNING: If the fireplacehas been used for wood burning,the firebox and chimney mustbe cleaned of soot, creosote andashes by a qualified chimneycleaner.
