To check the vent for properdrafting: Light a tightly rolled newspaper onone end and place it at the inside front edgeof the fireplace. Observe the smoke and besure the vent is properly drawing it up thechimney. If the smoke spills out into the room,extinguish the flame and remove any obstruc-tion until proper venting is achieved.The chimney flue must remain open a mini-mum of 3" at all times during the operationof this log set.For Massachusetts Residents OnlyInstallation of this vented gas log set in theCommonwealth of Massachusetts requiresthe damper be permanently removed orwelded in the fully open position.INSTALLING DAMPER CLAMPSecure the damper stop clamp provided tothe leading edge of the damper as shown inFigure 3. Inter-nally-tinned copper tubing maybe used in certain areas. Checkyour local codes. Use pipe of1/2" diameter or greater to allowproper gas volume to log set. Ifpipe is too small, undue loss ofvolume will occur.Installation must include a equipment shutoffvalve, union, and plugged 1/8" NPT tap. Lo-cate NPT tap within reach for test gauge hookup. NPT tap must be upstream from log set(see Figure 4, page 8).IMPORTANT: Install equipment shutoff valvein an accessible location. The equipmentshutoff valve is for turning on or shutting offthe gas to the appliance.Apply pipe joint sealant lightly to male NPTthreads. This will prevent excess sealant fromgoing into pipe. Excess sealant in pipe couldresult in a clogged burner injector.WARNING: Use pipe jointsealant that is resistant to liquidpetroleum (LP) gas.
