12Instruction Booklet IB48050Effective September 2012Instructions for installationoperation and maintenance of theAMPGARD 15 kV 300A vacuum startereaton Corporation www.eaton.comMaintenanceA maintenance program should be established as soon as thecontroller has been installed and put into operation After thecontroller has been inspected a number of times at monthlyintervals and the conditions noted, the frequency of inspectioncan be increased or decreased to suit the conditions foundBefore attempting maintenance, consult the order specificdrawings and instructions supplied with the controllerInsulation levelThe insulation resistance between poles, and from each pole toground, should be measured and recorded It is not practical tospecify an absolute value for this reading because it is dependent onother connected apparatus and conditions of service However, anyunusually low reading or abrupt reduction in a reading may indicatea possible source of trouble, and the cause should be investigatedand correctedFusesInspect the current limiting fuses after each relay initiated trip, because this is the most severe service to which they will besubjected Check the fuse resistance, and compare with the valueof a new fuse A visual sign of an open fuse is provided by a pop-upindicator on the top of the fuse If a fuse has blown due to a fault,it is likely that the other fuses experienced a similar overcurrentcondition In this case, Eaton recommends that all three fuses bereplaced Ensure that the replacement fuses are of the same ratingand mounting configuration as those originally suppliedBlownFuseIndicatorFigure 24. Blown Fuse IndicatorFuses can be removed by loosening the four nuts that secure thefuses to their mounting studs on the lower portion of the copperplate The phase barriers on the lower fuse mountings can beremoved if desired to ease access to the mounting studs andthe nuts The upper phase barriers are not removable Installationis the reverse of removal Bolt-in fuses must be torqued to25 lb-ft (33 Nm)• Remove nutsclosest to fuse• Remove lowernuts first• Be careful whenremoving last nutfrom fuse as it mayfall unless supportedFigure 25.
