Powering the control using external powerThe control can be powered using an external powersources. Before applying an external source, performthe following steps to insure that the regulator does notoperate and step off of neutral before installation:1. Open the V1 (and V6 if present) switches on the back panel2. Set POWER switch to OFF3. Set CONTROL FUNCTION switch to OFF4. Remove the 6-amp motor fuseFor detailed instructions on externally powering of a voltageregulator control, refer to Service Information MN225003ENCL-7 Voltage Regulator Control Installation, Operation, andMaintenance Instructions for information.1. Place 120 volts to the EXTERNAL SOURCE terminalslocated on the control front panel. Be certain thevoltage polarity is correct when applying power to thecontrol - positive to the black terminal, neutral to thewhite terminal and ground to green.2. While the CONTROL FUNCTION switch remains inthe OFF position, move the POWER switch to theEXTERNAL position. After applying power, the control can be programmed.Programming of the CRA control front panel is covered inthe Service literature shipped with the CRA. The standardcontrol sent with a CRA is Eaton's CL-7 control. BulletinB225-12017 CL-7 Control Reference is a guide to the basiccontrols settings and functionality. For more completeinformation, consult Service Information MN225003ENCL-7 Voltage Regulator Control Installation, Operation andMaintenance Instructions.Operations checkAfter control programming is complete, an operationscheck should be performed to confirm correct functioningof the CRA. The operations check can be performed on theregulator while in the shop or in the field.Field operations checkThe voltage regulator operations checks can be performedin the field by connecting to line power. The regulator maybe powered by closing the disconnect switches, openingthe bypass switch and putting the regulator into fulloperation or if possible, powered by closing the source-sidedisconnect switch while maintaining a closed bypass switchand opened load-side disconnect switch. To apply line power to the control there are two methods:1. When bypass switching is performed using 3 separateswitches: If the bypass switches being used are notsingle-pull type, line power can be applied by closingthe source switch only. Once the source disconnectswitch is closed, apply power to the control by closingthe V1 switch on the back panel.2. Putting the regulator into service: Using any type ofbypass switch (single-pull or individual switches), powercan be applied by closing the disconnect switches, opening the bypass switch and putting the regulatorfully into service. Make sure that the regulator is in theneutral position before starting the process and verifythis by using three independent methods. Use locallyIMPORTANTCarefully read the steps and warnings before performingany operations checks.DANGERExplosion Hazard. Voltage regulators are subject to highcirculating current during bypass switching. Refer toService Information MN225003EN Voltage RegulatorCL-7 Series Control Installation, Operation, andMaintenance Instructions for information on the CRAControl, and refer to the instruction manual supplied bythe voltage regulator manufacturer for specific safetyprocedures for bypass switching. Failure to comply willresult in severe personal injury or death. VR-T214.0DANGERThe operations check involves switching the voltageregulator off of the neutral position. This can safely bedone with the source disconnect switch and bypassswitch closed and the load disconnect switch open.Once the operations check is completed, the regulatormust be returned to the neutral position and theposition verified using three independent methodsbefore the regulator is bypassed into service. Failure todo so can result in serious injury or death. VR-T246.0IMPORTANTPay particular attention to correctly setting FC 49. Thissettings should be set to match the manufacture of thevoltage regulator and/or the correct tap-changer type.WARNINGHazardous Voltage. When applying external power to acontrol, an isolated power supply must be used. If thepower supply is not isolated and is connected with theincorrect polarity, it will cause the 120 Vac supply voltageto be shorted to ground. This can result in a shockhazard, damage to the control, damage to regulatorcomponentry, and damage to the power supply. VR-T245.0DANGERExplosion Hazard.
